Territorial scope | RC automobile: France métropolitaine, DROM-COM, and all countries signatory to the multilateral agreement (green card). Non-signatory countries require an international certificate provided by AXA on request. Other guarantees: France métropolitaine, DROM-COM, Monaco, and stays not exceeding 6 consecutive months in the same listed countries (exception: students studying abroad). Country list current as of 1 January 2024 (Réf. 972115H); consult www.bcf.asso.fr before any trip abroad. | Coverage applies in metropolitan France and French overseas departments and regions (DROM). Full coverage applies throughout EU member states for the life of the contract; for trips exceeding 3 months in EU territory, only civil liability is provided. Coverage also applies for trips under 3 months in Vatican, San Marino, Monaco, Liechtenstein and all other non-EU states listed on the green card. Natural disaster, technological disaster and terrorism guarantees do not apply outside metropolitan France. | Coverage applies in France, EU/EEA countries, the principalities of Andorra, Monaco and Liechtenstein, Vatican City, San Marino, and countries listed and not crossed out on the valid international motor insurance certificate. Coverage for natural disasters and terrorist acts applies exclusively in metropolitan France and French overseas departments and regions (DROM). | Guarantees apply in Metropolitan France, French Overseas Departments/Regions/Collectivities, EU member states, and countries where the international insurance card (green card) is in force, plus Andorra, Monaco, Liechtenstein, the Holy See and San Marino, for trips of less than one year. Vehicle assistance extends further to Mediterranean basin countries and Europe up to the Urals. The terrorism guarantee is restricted to French territory and specified Overseas territories. The legal protection (purchase/sale) guarantee is limited to disputes arising in France, Monaco and Andorra. |
Green card rules | The green card (certificat international d'assurance automobile) is issued by AXA on request for travel in non-signatory countries. For signatory countries, the standard policy certificate is sufficient. The list of signatory and non-signatory countries may evolve during the year; the updated list is available at www.bcf.asso.fr. The RC fonctionnement guarantee applies only within EU member states and the Principality of Monaco. | The green card (international insurance certificate) is valid throughout the EU for the duration of the contract, and in non-EU countries listed on the card for trips of less than 3 months. Beyond 3 months in the EU, only civil liability coverage remains in force. | The international motor insurance certificate is available from MAAF advisers in agency or by phone, via the customer online space on maaf.fr, and on the MAAF et Moi mobile application. It is mandatory for travel in Albania, Morocco, Moldova, North Macedonia, Tunisia, Turkey and Ukraine. Guarantees also apply when the vehicle is transported by air or sea between two countries where cover is provided. | The international insurance certificate (green card / carte verte) is issued at subscription and renewed at each annual expiry date. The detachable portion (certificat d'assurance) must be affixed to the vehicle. Guarantees are valid in all countries where the green card is recognised. In the event of vehicle theft, the RC liability guarantee ceases 30 days after the theft is reported to police/gendarmerie, or earlier if the guarantee is transferred to a replacement vehicle. |
Driver restrictions | The driver must hold a valid driving licence of the appropriate category. If the driver does not hold the required valid licence, coverage is excluded (except in cases of violence, theft, or use of the vehicle without the knowledge of the owner/guardian). Driving under the influence of alcohol (rate punishable by at least a 4th-class offence) or narcotics (proven by blood tests) leads to exclusion of coverage under the driver accident guarantee and the damage guarantee, and may lead to policy termination. Minors using the vehicle without authorisation are covered under RC but not under other guarantees. | The insured driver must hold a valid driving licence of the required category for the vehicle being driven. Coverage is excluded if the driver is under the legal driving age, does not hold a valid licence, is under the influence of alcohol or drugs, or refuses to submit to a breathalyser test. Any new driving circumstances must be declared by registered letter within 15 days of becoming known to the policyholder. | The driver must hold a valid driving licence appropriate to the type of vehicle and nature of transport, and must comply with any restrictive conditions on the licence. Cover is maintained for learner drivers under accompanied driving (AAC), supervised driving and supervised training schemes provided the scheme has been declared to MAAF in advance. A special excess applies when a novice driver not designated on the policy drives the vehicle. | Professionals of vehicle repair, sale and inspection are explicitly excluded from the definition of 'insured' when the vehicle is entrusted to them in the course of their duties. Coverage applies to the principal driver, designated occasional drivers, and any authorised driver. A 'novice driver' surcharge applies to drivers with fewer than 3 years of licence or those unable to prove continuous insurance cover during the 3 years preceding subscription. Drivers operating under the influence of alcohol (above legal BAC threshold) or narcotics are subject to exclusions on most guarantees and potential contractual termination. Driver age restrictions are not opposable to third-party victims. |
Claim notification deadline | For theft, attempted theft or vandalism: the insured must file a complaint with the competent authorities within 24 hours and send the receipt to AXA within 2 working days. For all other claims (accidents, fire, etc.): declaration must be made within 5 working days (30 days for natural disasters following ministerial decree publication). Claims may be declared to the usual AXA contact, at the registered office, or via the online customer space at axa.fr. Failure to meet deadlines, absent force majeure, may result in forfeiture of coverage if AXA demonstrates prejudice. | Claims must be declared within the timeframes stipulated in the contract. For theft, declaration must be made within 2 working days to the claims line 0 800 810 812. For natural disasters, declaration must be made within 30 days of the official interministerial order. For other claims, declaration must be made promptly with all relevant documents. | Claims must be declared as soon as known and no later than: 2 working days for theft; 30 days after publication of the ministerial order for natural disasters; 5 working days in all other cases. Failure to comply, where it causes prejudice to MAAF, may result in forfeiture of cover (déchéance), though this is not opposable to injured third parties. | General deadline: 5 working days from knowledge of the claim. Exceptions: theft – 2 working days; legal protection disputes (DPRSA) – 30 working days from knowledge of the dispute or rejection of a claim; natural catastrophes – as soon as known and no later than 10 days after publication of the ministerial order; technological catastrophes – 10 days after publication of the order; broken glass, Auto Presto, Location Pro – submit paid invoice within 30 days. Late notification may result in loss of guarantee entitlement if the insurer can demonstrate prejudice. Roadside assistance must be activated by telephone at the time of the event. |
Bonus malus rules | The French regulated Clause de Réduction-Majoration (CRM / bonus-malus) applies compulsorily. Starting coefficient: 1.0. Each accident-free year reduces the coefficient by 5% (7% for 'tournées/tous déplacements' usage), with a minimum of 0.50. Each at-fault claim increases the coefficient by 25% (20% for 'tournées'); 12.5% (10%) if responsibility is only partial. Maximum coefficient: 3.50; after 2 consecutive claim-free years the coefficient cannot exceed 1.0. No malus is applied for the first claim after a period of at least 3 years at coefficient 0.50. Sinistres due to force majeure, third-party fault, or vehicle theft by unauthorised persons are not taken into account. | The French mandatory bonus-malus system (coefficient de réduction-majoration, CRM) applies. The starting coefficient is 1 at subscription. The coefficient decreases each claim-free year and increases following a responsible claim. Coefficients range from 0.50 to 3.50. The Avantage Bon Conducteur (ABC) provides an additional tariff reduction of up to 20% based on driving history and past claims, applied from subscription and evolving throughout the contract. | A reduction-increase coefficient (coefficient bonus/malus) is applied to the reference premium at each annual renewal in accordance with ministerial order A 121-1 of the Insurance Code. The starting coefficient is 1.00. Each claim-free year reduces the coefficient by 5% (multiplied by 0.95). Each claim for which the insured is wholly responsible increases the coefficient by 25% (×1.25); partial responsibility results in a 12.5% increase (×1.125). The coefficient cannot fall below 0.50 (maximum 50% bonus) or exceed 3.50. A 'bonus à vie' clause applies: no increase is applied for the first claim occurring after an uninterrupted period of at least 3 years at coefficient 0.50. | The standard French bonus-malus system applies (Clause de réduction-majoration, Article A121-1 Code des assurances). Starting coefficient: 1.00. Annual reduction for claim-free year: 5% (coefficient × 0.95), minimum coefficient 0.50. After at least 3 consecutive years at 0.50 with no claim, no malus applies to the first subsequent claim. Per claim, coefficient increases by 25% (or 12.5% if only partial liability, e.g. involving a pedestrian or cyclist). Maximum coefficient: 3.50. After 2 consecutive claim-free years, the coefficient cannot exceed 1.00. The reference period for calculation is the 12 months preceding the 2 months before the annual renewal. Applies to: RC, vehicle damage, theft, fire, glass breakage and natural catastrophe risks. Novice driver surcharge (up to 100% of reference premium, halved for AAC licence holders) applies for drivers with under 3 years' licence or uninterrupted insurance. |

Direct payment policy | AXA pays victims or their heirs directly on behalf of the insured when civil liability is established. The contractual deductible (franchise) is not opposable to victims or their heirs; AXA indemnifies them in full and then seeks reimbursement of the franchise from the insured. | Claims are handled by Pacifica directly; repair costs assessed by an expert appointed by Pacifica using manufacturer rate schedules; payment by automatic bank debit or cheque. | In case of damage covered by a chosen damage guarantee, the insured has free choice of professional repairer. If a MAAF-approved repairer is chosen, no advance payment is required and the indemnity is paid directly to the repairer net of any applicable deductible. | Groupama pays indemnities directly to victims on behalf of the insured within guarantee limits. For repairs at approved partner garages, zero upfront payment (0 avance de frais) applies. Legal fees and expenses under the legal defence guarantee are paid directly by delegation. Roadside assistance services are organised and paid directly by Mutuaide Assistance. |
