BGV Badische Versicherungen (Badischer Gemeinde-Versicherungs-Verband, a public-law corporation, together with its subsidiary BGV-Versicherung Aktiengesellschaft)
BGV
BGV is a motor casco insurance for the Germany market with online purchase and 24/7 assistance.
Direct payment
Under the optional SchadenservicePlus add-on, BGV selects the repair workshop from its partner network, directly commissions and pays for the repair (net of any deductible), and provides a 6-year warranty on the repair.
Geographic scope
Europe and non-European territories within the scope of the European Union
Casco coverage applies within the geographical borders of Europe and the non-European EU territories; the scope can be contractually extended or restricted.
Unique selling points
- SchadenservicePlus gives a 6-year repair warranty and, for bodywork/paint damage, free pickup, a replacement car for up to 7 days and vehicle cleaning at BGV's partner workshops.
- ElektroPlus extends full casco to all-risk cover for the drive battery of electric and hybrid cars, including quarantine, decontamination and disposal costs and no 'new-for-old' deduction.
- Optional Rabattschutz prevents a downgrade of the no-claims discount in liability and full casco after one claim per insurance year.
- The Exklusiv tariff reimburses the original purchase price of used cars up to 6 years old if a total loss occurs within 24 months of purchase.
- AuslandsschadenPlus (Klassik and Exklusiv) settles no-fault accidents abroad entirely under German law through BGV, avoiding the need to deal with a foreign insurer.
Coverage limits
Own damage coverage (Kasko)
Covered
Covers damage, destruction, total loss or loss of the insured vehicle under partial casco (Teilkasko) or full casco (Vollkasko); compensation is generally capped at the vehicle's replacement value (Wiederbeschaffungswert) or new price (Neupreis), with a separate cap of EUR 250,000 for commercially insured buses.
Total loss compensation
Covered
Pays the replacement value less residual value on total loss, destruction or loss of the vehicle; new-value compensation (Neupreisentschädigung) applies if total loss occurs within 6 months (Basis tariff), 18 months (Klassik tariff) or 24 months (Exklusiv tariff) of first registration.
Repair cost coverage (partial damage)
Covered
Pays the costs required for repair up to the replacement value if the vehicle is damaged without constituting a total loss; SchadenservicePlus (optional in all tariffs) provides repair at a partner workshop with a 6-year repair warranty.
Theft and robbery
Covered
Covers theft, robbery, extortion-related surrender of the vehicle, and (under conditions) embezzlement or unauthorized use as part of partial casco cover.
Glass breakage
Covered
Covers breakage damage to the vehicle's glazing (windscreen, rear, roof, side and partition windows, mirror glass and light covers), including calibration costs for assistance systems after glass replacement; windscreen repair (instead of replacement) is reimbursed without deduction of any agreed deductible.
Natural hazards
Covered
Covers storm (from wind force 8), hail, lightning, flood, volcanic eruption, earthquake, landslide, subsidence and avalanches; damage from roof avalanches (Dachlawinen) is additionally covered only in the Exklusiv tariff.
Vandalism / malicious acts
Conditional
Malicious or spiteful acts by unauthorized third parties, including hacking/cyberattacks on the vehicle software, are covered only under full casco (Vollkasko), not under partial casco.
Breakdown assistance (Schutzbrief)
€500
Optional add-on (Schutzbrief) providing roadside assistance for breakdown, accident or theft, including recovery, towing (up to EUR 200 if self-organized), short-distance transport (up to EUR 60), overnight stays (up to EUR 100/night, max 3 nights) and rental car costs (up to EUR 350 domestic / EUR 500 abroad); available via a 24-hour hotline.
Replacement vehicle
€75
Only in Exklusiv
In the Exklusiv tariff, a replacement vehicle is provided in casco claims up to EUR 75 per day for a maximum of 14 days; independently, the optional SchadenservicePlus add-on (available in all tariffs) provides a free replacement vehicle for up to 7 days when the vehicle is repaired at a partner workshop.
Driver accident cover
Excluded
Not covered under the casco (Kasko) policy itself; personal injury or death of the driver is covered under the separate, optional Fahrerschutzversicherung (driver protection insurance) with limits of up to EUR 15 million per claim and specific sub-limits (e.g. up to EUR 100,000 for pain and suffering).
Key conditions
Driver age and experience limit
The standard casco tariffs (Basis, Klassik, Exklusiv) do not state a general minimum driver age; the no-claims class system grants a reduced starting class (SF ½) only if the policyholder has held a car/motorcycle licence for at least 3 years. The separate Oldtimer tariff requires all authorised drivers to be at least 23 years old.
Repair network requirements
If SchadenservicePlus is selected but the policyholder does not contact BGV before commissioning the repair (so BGV cannot select the workshop), or has the vehicle repaired at a different workshop for reasons within their control, BGV only reimburses 80% of the otherwise eligible repair costs.
Territorial scope
Casco coverage applies within the geographical borders of Europe and the non-European territories belonging to the scope of the European Union; the territorial scope can be extended or restricted by agreement with BGV.
Anti-theft requirements
No specific anti-theft device (e.g. alarm, tracker) is mandated for standard casco cover; however, BGV's waiver of the gross-negligence defence in casco does not apply if the policyholder enables the theft of the vehicle or its parts/accessories.
Claim notification deadline
Any casco claim must generally be reported within one week; theft or loss of the vehicle (or insured parts) must be reported to BGV immediately in text form, and thefts, fires or animal-collision damage exceeding EUR 500 must also be reported to the police without delay.
Deductible rules
An agreed deductible (Selbstbeteiligung) is deducted from the indemnity for each claim event and each insured vehicle. Available options are EUR 0 or EUR 150 for partial casco and EUR 0, 150, 300, 500 or 1,000 for full casco. Windscreen repair (as opposed to replacement) is reimbursed without deducting the deductible, except when the repair takes place during a shopping trip, leisure event or similar circumstances in a car park.
