Barmenia Versicherungen a.G.
Barmenia
Barmenia is a motor third-party liability insurance for the Germany market with online purchase and 24/7 assistance.
Direct payment
Where the optional Werkstattservice is agreed, the insurer selects a partner workshop after the claim is reported and settles the repair invoice directly up to the replacement value; without this option the customer contracts the workshop themselves and is reimbursed.
Geographic scope
Germany-wide
Europe and the non-European territories belonging to the EU; extended to further non-European countries where an International Insurance (Green) Card is issued and the country is not struck through
Unique selling points
- Premium-Schutz includes Entschädigungsausfallschutz, equalising accident compensation abroad up to German legal standards under a combined liability sum insured of up to EUR 100 million (max. EUR 15 million per injured person).
- New-value/purchase-price compensation after a total loss extends up to 36 months after first registration in Premium-Schutz, well beyond the 12-month period in Basis-Schutz.
- Follow-on damage from animal bites to cables and hoses is covered up to EUR 20,000 in Premium-Schutz, versus EUR 5,000 in Basis-Schutz.
- Customers who accept workshop binding (Werkstattservice) via the insurer's partner network receive a premium discount alongside repair guarantees.
Coverage limits
Bodily Injury Liability
Covered
No limit stated
The insurer indemnifies the policyholder against liability claims for injury or death caused by use of the vehicle, up to the agreed sum insured. The exact sum insured for personal injury is stated in the individual policy schedule (Versicherungsschein), not fixed in the terms and conditions.
Property Damage Liability
Covered
No limit stated
The insurer indemnifies the policyholder against liability claims for damage to, destruction of, or loss of property (and pure financial loss) caused by use of the vehicle, up to the agreed sum insured stated in the individual policy schedule.
Defence Against Unfounded Claims
Covered
If liability claims against the policyholder are unfounded (wholly or as to amount), the insurer defends against them at its own cost as part of the mandatory MTPL cover; this applies identically in Basis-Schutz, Top-Schutz and Premium-Schutz.
International Insurance (Green) Card
Covered
Where the insurer has issued the International Insurance Card, MTPL cover extends to the non-European countries listed on it, as long as the country name is not struck through; scope of cover follows the legally required level in the country visited, but at least the level of the German contract.
Motor Protection Letter (Schutzbrief)
Optional
Optional add-on (only if agreed and documented in the policy schedule) covering breakdown/accident assistance: towing and recovery organised by the insurer at unlimited cost (up to EUR 200 if self-arranged), overnight stays up to EUR 100/night for up to 3 nights, rental car up to EUR 85/day for up to 7 days (up to EUR 600 abroad for the trip home), key service up to EUR 120, plus medical repatriation, foreign-travel assistance and, for EVs, towing to the nearest charging station. Identical wording and limits apply in Basis-Schutz, Top-Schutz and Premium-Schutz.
Driver Protection (Fahrerschutz)
Optional
Optional add-on (only for cars, only if agreed and documented in the policy schedule) covering personal injury suffered by the authorised driver in an accident, calculated as if a third party had caused the accident under German liability law; no pain-and-suffering (Schmerzensgeld) is paid. The benefit is capped at the personal-injury sum insured of the MTPL cover. Identical in all three tiers.
Passenger Accident Cover
No limit stated
No standalone passenger/occupant accident benefit is described in the Basis-Schutz, Top-Schutz or Premium-Schutz conditions; injured occupants other than the driver are covered only via the Kfz-Haftpflichtversicherung's general bodily-injury liability toward third parties, not via a dedicated passenger-accident benefit.
Key conditions
Territorial scope
Cover applies within the geographical boundaries of Europe and the non-European territories belonging to the EU. The scope follows the legally prescribed insurance cover of the country visited, but at least the scope of the German contract.
Green card rules
If the insurer has issued an International Insurance (Green) Card, cover extends to the non-European countries listed on it as long as the country name is not crossed out.
Driver restrictions
The vehicle may only be used by an authorised driver who uses it with the knowledge and consent of the person entitled to dispose of it, and only if that driver holds the required driving licence; the policyholder, keeper or owner must not knowingly allow use by an unauthorised or unlicensed driver.
Claim notification deadline
Any loss event that could give rise to an insurer payment must be reported within one week.
Bonus-malus rules
Premiums in MTPL and comprehensive cover are set according to a no-claims class (SF-Klasse) system based on claims history (see Anhang 1 tables); a claim-free calendar year moves the contract up one class, while a claim year triggers a downgrade per the tier-specific tables. An optional Rabattschutz add-on (20% surcharge) protects against downgrading after the first claim in a calendar year, subject to conditions (all drivers ≥23 years, class ≥5, minimum excess of EUR 300 in comprehensive cover, claim-free year of application).
