Direct payment

In MTPL, the insurer directly settles justified third-party claims in cash and defends unjustified claims at its own cost; the insurer is authorised to negotiate and settle claims on the policyholder's behalf.

Geographic scope

Geographic borders of Europe plus non-European territories belonging to the EU

Cover applies within the geographic borders of Europe and non-European EU territories; if an International Insurance (Green) Card is issued, cover extends to the non-European countries listed on it that are not crossed out.

Unique selling points

  • Combined MTPL liability limit of up to EUR 100 million (capped at EUR 15 million per injured person) can be arranged, well above German statutory minimum liability sums.
  • Mallorca-Police extension (Komfort tier) automatically covers liability for rental cars, motorcycles or campers used abroad by the policyholder or cohabiting spouse/partner.
  • Optional Rabattschutz keeps the no-claims class stable after one at-fault claim per year, available for both MTPL and comprehensive cover.
  • Europe-wide Autoschutzbrief add-on bundles breakdown recovery, rental car, overnight stays and vehicle repatriation into the MTPL contract.

Coverage limits

Bodily injury liability

€100,000,000

For a contract to qualify for the (free, included) environmental-damage liability extension, the MTPL sum insured must be EUR 100 million lump-sum for personal injury, property damage and financial loss combined, capped at EUR 15 million per injured person; actual contracted sums are stated in the policy schedule and may differ.

Property damage liability

€100,000,000

Property and financial-loss liability is part of the same combined lump-sum limit of EUR 100 million referenced for the environmental-damage extension qualification; individually contracted sums insured are shown in the policy schedule.

Defence against unjustified claims

Covered

The insurer defends unjustified or partly unjustified third-party claims at its own cost as part of the core MTPL cover; no separate sum insured is stated.

Source

International Insurance (Green) Card

Covered

If an International Insurance Card is issued, MTPL cover automatically extends to the non-European countries listed on it that are not crossed out, at the level of cover required in the country visited (at least the level of the German contract).

Source

Autoschutzbrief (roadside/breakdown assistance)

Optional

The MTPL policy can be extended with an optional Autoschutzbrief covering breakdown/accident recovery, towing, rental car, overnight stays and repatriation across Europe; it can only be bought together with (as an extension of) the MTPL contract, with numerous per-benefit sub-limits (e.g. EUR 100 roadside repair, EUR 350 rental car).

Driver protection (Fahrerschutzversicherung)

€15,000,000

Optional cover for the authorised driver, payable only together with an MTPL contract for a car or camper; benefit is capped at the per-injured-person MTPL deckungssumme, up to a maximum of EUR 15 million.

Passenger/occupant accident cover (Kfz-Unfallversicherung)

Optional

Optional, legally separate Kfz-Unfallversicherung under the lump-sum system (Pauschalsystem) covers all authorised occupants of the insured vehicle for invalidity, hospital daily allowance and death benefits, at sums insured chosen in the policy schedule.

Key conditions

Territorial scope

Cover applies within the geographic borders of Europe and non-European territories belonging to the EU, at least at the level of cover of the German contract, subject to the mandatory minimums of the country visited.

Green card rules

If an International Insurance (Green) Card has been issued, cover extends to the non-European countries listed on it that are not crossed out, applying the higher of the local mandatory level or the German contract's scope.

Driver restrictions

The vehicle may only be driven by a person holding the required driving licence, and must not be driven under the influence of alcohol, drugs or other intoxicants; the policyholder, keeper or owner must not knowingly allow use by an unauthorised or unlicensed driver.

Claim notification deadline

Every claim event that may lead to a benefit must be reported to the insurer within one week; reporting to the accident/breakdown emergency call centre counts for the whole motor insurance.

Bonus-malus rules

Premiums follow a no-claims discount system (SF-classes 0 to 50 and damage class M) based on the claims-free history in MTPL and comprehensive cover; an optional 'Rabattschutz' rider (also available for MTPL) prevents a downgrade after one at-fault claim per calendar year, provided the contract is rated at least SF-class 5 and combined with an Autoschutzbrief.
