Continentale Krankenversicherung a.G. (Continentale Insurance Group)
Continentale
Continentale is a motor third-party liability insurance for the Germany market with online purchase and 24/7 assistance.
Direct payment
If the third party's damage claim is justified, Continentale pays the compensation directly in cash; if a claim is unjustified, Continentale defends against it at its own cost, including claims that are unjustified only in amount.
Geographic scope
Germany-wide
Coverage applies within the geographic borders of Europe and the non-European territories belonging to the scope of the European Union; scope follows the legally required insurance extent of the visited country, at minimum the extent of the policy itself.
Unique selling points
- Liability cover reaches up to 100 million EUR for property and financial loss, far above the German statutory minimum of 1.22 million EUR / 50,000 EUR.
- Rabattschutz keeps the no-claims class unaffected after a policyholder's first claim in a year, available for both MTPL and Vollkasko.
- Included cost-free hospital daily allowance of 10 EUR per day for up to 28 days for the driver after an accident with the insured car, in the Komfort tariff.
- Mallorca-Deckung extends liability cover to rental cars, motorcycles or camper vans hired abroad in Europe, at no extra premium in the Komfort tariff.
- A 24/7 accident and breakdown emergency call service is available around the clock for claims reporting and assistance.
Coverage limits
Property Damage / Pure Financial Loss Liability
€100,000,000
Continentale offers coverage of up to 100 million EUR for property damage and pure financial loss, well above the German statutory minimum of 1.22 million EUR for property damage and 50,000 EUR for pure financial loss.
Defence Against Unfounded Claims
€100
If a third-party claim is unjustified (including claims unjustified only in amount), Continentale defends against it at its own cost. No explicit unlimited amount is stated in the source; the defence is simply 'at our expense'.
Green Card (International Insurance Card)
Conditional
If Continentale has issued an International Insurance Card (Green Card), MTPL cover extends to the non-European countries listed on it, provided the country name is not struck through; the extent of cover follows the same rule as for travel within Europe/EU territories.
Autoschutzbrief (Roadside Assistance / Breakdown Cover)
Optional
The Autoschutzbrief can only be taken out together with the MTPL contract for the same vehicle and is not available at statutory minimum sums; its premium is included in the MTPL premium only if applied for. Sub-limits include: roadside repair up to 103 EUR (uncapped if organised via Continentale's 24/7 emergency call centre), towing up to 154 EUR (uncapped if organised by Continentale), rental car up to 70 EUR/day for max. 7 days, overnight stays up to 80 EUR per person/night (max. 3 nights).
Driver Accident Cover (Kfz-Unfallversicherung, driver)
Optional
Kfz-Unfallversicherung is a legally separate optional contract from MTPL, covering invalidity and death benefits, hospital daily allowance and daily allowance; the actual sums insured are set out in the individual Versicherungsschein and are not fixed by the general conditions.
Passenger Accident Cover (Kfz-Unfallversicherung, occupants)
Optional
Under the Pauschalsystem, all authorised occupants of the vehicle are covered under the Kfz-Unfallversicherung, with the insured sum divided among occupants present (increased by 50% if two or more occupants); under the Platzsystem specific seats/numbers are insured. This is an optional, separate contract from MTPL with sums set in the Versicherungsschein.
Key conditions
Territorial scope
MTPL cover applies within the geographic borders of Europe and the non-European territories belonging to the scope of the European Union; the extent follows the legally prescribed insurance scope of the country visited, but at least the scope of the policy.
Green card rules
If Continentale has issued an International Insurance Card (Green Card), cover also extends to the non-European countries listed on it, unless the country name is struck through.
Driver restrictions
The vehicle may only be used by an authorised driver holding the required driving licence; it must not be driven under the influence of alcohol or other intoxicants; 17-year-old drivers require the legally prescribed accompanying supervision (not applicable to MTPL itself but relevant to related covers).
Claim notification deadline
Any event that could lead to a claim must be reported within one week in text form (e.g. letter, fax, email); claims asserted out of court against the policyholder must likewise be reported within one week of being raised.
Bonus-malus rules
Contracts are classified into no-claims classes (SF-Klassen) ranging from SF 35 (best, 20% of base premium) down through SF 0 and M (133% of base premium), reassessed annually on 1 January based on the claims history of the preceding calendar year; a claims-free year moves the contract up one class, a claims-affected year moves it down according to fixed tables.
