Direct payment

If claims are justified, the insurer pays cash compensation directly; if claims are unjustified, the insurer defends against them at its own cost and is authorised to settle or reject claims asserted against the policyholder in the policyholder's name.

Geographic scope

Europe and non-European EU territories

Coverage applies within the geographic boundaries of Europe and the non-European territories that belong to the scope of the European Union; the extent of cover follows the legally required scope in the country visited, but at least the scope agreed in the contract.

Unique selling points

  • Best-Leistungs-Garantie: for an extra premium, events not covered by the agreed MTPL tariff but covered by a comparable competitor tariff are automatically included.
  • Mallorca clause is included as standard, extending liability cover to rented cars on private trips in Europe (explicitly including Germany and the Asian part of Turkey) for 3 months from rental.
  • No-claims discount (Schadenfreiheitsrabatt) is retained for up to 10 years after deregistering the last vehicle, compared with the market-typical 7 years.
  • First-time policyholders can start at no-claims class SF 1/2 if they have held a driving licence for at least three years, giving a lower starting premium than the standard entry class.

Coverage limits

Bodily injury liability coverage

Covered

Covers third-party claims for personal injury or death caused by use of the insured vehicle, up to the sums insured agreed in the policy schedule; the exact insured sums are not stated in the AKB/IPID and must be taken from the individual Versicherungsschein.

Property damage liability coverage

Covered

Covers third-party property damage claims from use of the insured vehicle, including repair/replacement costs and consequential losses such as loss of use and diminution in value, up to the agreed sums insured stated in the policy schedule.

Source

Passive legal defence against unjustified claims

Covered

If asserted claims are unjustified, the insurer defends against them at its own expense and conducts any resulting legal dispute with the claimant on the policyholder's behalf; this is described as a form of 'passive' legal protection built into the MTPL cover, but no cost ceiling is stated.

Source

International Insurance Card (Green Card) coverage extension

Covered

If the insurer has issued an International Insurance Card, MTPL cover extends to the non-European countries listed on the card, provided the country name is not crossed out; the scope of cover in the visited country otherwise follows A.1.4.1.

Source

Roadside assistance / breakdown cover (Autoschutzbrief)

Optional

Roadside and breakdown assistance is provided under the Autoschutzbrief, a legally separate contract that can only be taken out alongside (not instead of) the MTPL policy; it covers, for example, restoring roadworthiness at the scene (up to €100), towing (up to €200) and additional help for breakdown, accident or theft more than 50 km from the policyholder's home.

Source

Driver accident insurance (Fahrer-Unfallversicherung)

Optional

A legally separate, optional contract (not available with statutory minimum sums) that indemnifies the authorised driver's actual personal injury loss (e.g. loss of earnings, survivors' pension, pain and suffering) as if a third party were liable, applying German statutory tort compensation rules, up to the agreed sum insured.

Source

Occupant accident insurance (Kfz-Unfallversicherung)

Optional

A legally separate, optional lump-sum accident contract for vehicle occupants (driver and passengers), paying agreed sums for invalidity, daily allowance, hospital daily allowance or death, under either a Pauschalsystem (per-vehicle sum shared among occupants) or Platzsystem (per-seat sum).

Key conditions

Territorial scope

Cover applies within the geographic boundaries of Europe and the non-European territories that belong to the scope of the European Union; the scope of cover follows the legally prescribed minimum of the country visited, but at least the scope agreed in the contract.

Green card rules

Where an International Insurance Card (Green Card) has been issued, MTPL cover also extends to the non-European countries listed on it, unless the country name is crossed out.

Driver restrictions

The vehicle may only be driven by an authorised driver (someone using it with the knowledge and consent of the person entitled to dispose of it) who holds the required driving licence; a legally imposed driving ban is treated the same as lacking a licence. The vehicle must not be driven, and must not knowingly be allowed to be driven, by a driver unfit due to alcohol or drugs.

Claim notification deadline

Every claim event that may lead to a payment must be reported within one week; if third-party claims are asserted against the policyholder out of court, this must also be reported within one week, and court claims must be reported without delay (unverzüglich). Self-settled property damage of no more than €500 need only be reported if self-settlement is unsuccessful.

Bonus-malus rules

The contract is classified into a no-claims class (SF-Klasse) that determines the premium rate, ranging for cars from SF 0 (108% of the base KH rate) to SF 50 (17%); reclassification takes place each 1 January based on the claims history of the preceding calendar year. An optional 'Rabattschutz' (bonus protection) can be agreed if the contract is at least in SF-Klasse 10 in both MTPL and comprehensive cover and all drivers are at least 23 years old; a claim can also be 'bought back' (voluntarily reimbursed to the insurer, up to €1,000, within twelve months) to keep the contract classified as claim-free.
