Direct payment

Premiums can be paid annually, semi-annually, quarterly or monthly, as agreed; semi-annual, quarterly and monthly payment is only available via SEPA direct debit, with a minimum instalment of €15.

Geographic scope

Europe and the non-European territories belonging to the European Union

Coverage applies within the geographical boundaries of Europe and the non-European EU territories; at minimum the statutory insurance scope of the visited country applies. Extension to further non-European countries is possible via the International Insurance Card (Green Card), except for countries crossed out on the card.

Unique selling points

  • Flat €100 million combined liability sum insured for personal, property, financial and environmental damage — far above the statutory minimum.
  • Personal injury liability capped at a generous €15 million per injured person.
  • Built-in environmental liability cover under the Umweltschadensgesetz up to €5 million per event / €10 million per year, with no extra premium.
  • Optional Rabattschutz lets you keep one claim per year without losing your accumulated no-claims discount.
  • Rated by Stiftung Warentest as having a premium level 'far better than average' (test dated 11/2025).

Defence against unfounded claims

Covered

If a third-party claim is unfounded, either in whole or in amount, EUROPA defends against it at its own cost as part of the mandatory MTPL cover (no separate legal-expenses sum insured is stated).

Source

International Insurance Card (Green Card)

Covered

Cover extends to non-European countries listed on the International Insurance Card issued by EUROPA on request, unless the country is crossed out on the card; the card must be valid at the date of loss.

Kfz-Schutzbrief (roadside/breakdown assistance)

Optional

Optional add-on (Kfz-Schutzbrief), sold only together with MTPL for the same vehicle and only if separately requested; its premium is included in the MTPL premium only if applied for. Covers breakdown/accident/theft help across Europe with sub-limits, e.g. roadside repair up to €103 if self-organised, towing up to €154, up to 3 nights' accommodation at €90/night, rental car abroad up to €630, and misfuelling costs up to €500.

Driver personal accident cover

No limit stated

No standalone driver accident (Kfz-Unfallversicherung) cover is part of this MTPL product; the AKB only comprises Kfz-Haftpflicht, Kasko and Kfz-Schutzbrief.

No standalone passenger accident insurance is included; passengers are protected only via the MTPL liability cover for injuries caused to them by the vehicle, not via a dedicated accident sum insured.

Key conditions

Territorial scope

Coverage exists within the geographical boundaries of Europe and the non-European territories belonging to the EU; at minimum the statutory insurance scope of the country visited applies.

Green card rules

If EUROPA has issued an International Insurance Card (Green Card), MTPL cover extends to the non-European countries listed on it unless the country name is crossed out; the card must be valid on the date of loss.

Driver restrictions

The vehicle may only be used by an authorised driver holding the required driving licence; driving under the influence of alcohol or other intoxicants is prohibited, and use at unauthorised motorsport events/races is excluded from cover.

Claim notification deadline

The policyholder must notify EUROPA in text form of any loss event that could trigger a claim within one week; reporting to the 24-hour accident and breakdown hotline counts as notification.

Bonus-malus rules

The contract is reclassified each calendar year into a no-claims class (SF-Klasse) based on the claims history per the scales in Annex 1: a claim-free year leads to an upgrade, a claim-burdened year to a downgrade. Claims history from another vehicle or insurer can be transferred if the ceded vehicle belongs to the same or a higher vehicle group, the request is made within 10 years of the change of predominant use or contract end, the transfer is irrevocable, and MTPL and comprehensive (Vollkasko) histories are only taken over together.
