HDI Versicherung AG
HDI
HDI is a motor third-party liability insurance for the Germany market with no online purchase and 24/7 assistance.
Direct payment
For justified third-party liability claims, HDI pays compensation directly in cash to the injured party and defends unjustified claims at its own cost; HDI is authorised to settle or reject claims made against the policyholder in the policyholder's name.
Geographic scope
Europe and territories belonging to the EU
Cover applies within the geographic borders of Europe and non-European territories belonging to the EU; scope follows the visiting country's legally required minimum, at least matching the German contract. If HDI has issued an International Insurance (Green) Card, cover extends to the additional non-European countries listed on it that are not crossed out.
Unique selling points
- Flat combined liability limit of EUR 100 million per event (personal injury, property damage and financial loss), well above statutory minimums, with up to EUR 15 million per injured person.
- Automatic Mallorca-Police protection for rental cars driven abroad, included at no extra cost for up to three months.
- Round-the-clock claims assistance via the HDI Schaden-Service.
- Built-in environmental damage cover (Kfz-Umweltschadenversicherung) up to EUR 10 million per year, a feature not all competitors bundle into MTPL.
- 5% multi-policy discount on the motor premium when bundling with other HDI Privatschutz contracts.
Coverage limits
Bodily injury liability
Not established from the insurer's documents
Two liability sum options can be agreed: the statutory minimum sums insured, or a flat combined sum of EUR 100 million for personal injury, property damage and pure financial loss together, with compensation for personal injury capped at EUR 15 million per injured person. This applies equally under Motor Komfort and Motor Premium.
Property damage liability
Not established from the insurer's documents
Property damage is covered within the same flat combined sum of EUR 100 million per event shared with bodily injury and pure financial loss; alternatively the statutory minimum sums insured can be agreed instead of the flat sum.
Legal defence against liability claims
Not established from the insurer's documents
HDI is authorised and obliged to settle justified claims in cash and to defend unjustified or excessive claims at its own cost, acting in the policyholder's name; this is included within MTPL and has no separately stated monetary cap. A stand-alone traffic legal protection policy (Verkehrs-Rechtsschutz), underwritten by ROLAND Rechtsschutz-Versicherungs-AG, has historically been offered as a separate optional add-on.
International Insurance (Green) Card
Not established from the insurer's documents
Where HDI has issued the Green Card, MTPL cover automatically extends to the non-European countries listed on it that are not crossed out, at no extra premium, with scope following the visited country's legal minimum, at least the German contract scope.
Roadside assistance (Mobilitäts-Schutz)
Not established from the insurer's documents
Mobilitäts-Schutz is an optional add-on that can only be taken out together with MTPL for the same vehicle. It covers breakdown assistance at the roadside (up to EUR 300), towing (up to EUR 400), recovery of the vehicle, onward/return travel, overnight stays, replacement vehicles and further assistance in Europe and EU overseas territories.
Driver accident protection (Fahrer-Schutz)
Not established from the insurer's documents
Optional Fahrer-Schutz add-on within MTPL for Pkw, Campingfahrzeuge and Lieferwagen im Werkverkehr, covering personal injury suffered by the authorised driver while driving the insured vehicle, calculated as if a third party were liable; maximum indemnity is EUR 8 million per claim and insurance year.
Passenger accident insurance
Not established from the insurer's documents
The current AKB (as of 07/2024) does not offer a stand-alone passenger/occupant accident insurance (Kfz-Unfallversicherung) as a product line; the only accident-related add-on is Fahrer-Schutz, which covers solely the authorised driver, not other occupants.
Key conditions
Territorial scope
Cover applies within the geographic borders of Europe and the non-European territories belonging to the EU. The scope follows the legally required insurance scope of the country visited, but never less than the German contract's scope.
Green card rules
Where HDI has issued the International Insurance (Green) Card, cover automatically extends to the additional non-European countries listed on it that are not crossed out, following the visited country's legal minimum scope, at least matching the German contract.
Driver restrictions
Cover extends to the policyholder and co-insured persons: the vehicle's keeper, owner, any driver, the technical supervisor for autonomously driving vehicles, authorised occupants (unless another insurer must provide cover), the employer/public employer when used for business with the policyholder's consent, and an employed bus conductor. There is no blanket restriction on eligible drivers, but using the vehicle without the required driving licence or without the consent of the person entitled to dispose of it is a breach of duty that can reduce or exclude benefits.
Claim notification deadline
Any loss event that may lead to a claim must be reported to HDI within one week; an immediate report to HDI's accident and breakdown hotline also counts as notification for all motor insurance covers held on the same vehicle.
Bonus-malus rules
Premiums follow a no-claims discount (Schadenfreiheitsrabatt, SF) system with classes from SF ½ to SF 50 plus classes 0 and M, based on the claims history. New contracts normally start in class 0 unless a special starting class or a transferred claims history applies; the contract moves up one class after a claim-free calendar year and is downgraded according to fixed tables after one or more claims in a year.
