Direct payment

Mecklenburgische examines all asserted third-party claims, resists unfounded claims at its own cost, and pays justified claims directly to the injured third party up to the sum insured, rather than reimbursing the policyholder.

Geographic scope

Nationwide (Germany)

Cover applies within the geographical borders of Europe and the non-European territories belonging to the EU; if an International Insurance (Green) Card is issued, cover extends to the additional non-European countries listed on it, unless the country name is struck through.

Unique selling points

  • Combined liability sum of €100 million per claim event, far above Germany's statutory MTPL minimums, with up to €15 million per injured person.
  • Free 'Mallorca policy' extension covers liability for self-drive rental cars used abroad at no extra premium.
  • Technology-neutral cover for electric and hybrid vehicles, including drive battery, charging cable and wallbox protection, plus a premium discount for electric drivetrains.
  • 24/7 telephone service, every day of the year, for claims and policy queries.
  • Optional GAP cover closes the payout gap between the insurer's settlement and the outstanding leasing or financing balance after a total loss.

Coverage limits

Bodily Injury Liability

€15,000,000

Combined lump-sum liability cover of €100 million per claim event for personal injury, property damage and pure financial loss combined, capped at €15 million per injured person for bodily injury.

Source

Property Damage Liability

€100,000,000

Property damage is covered within the same combined €100 million lump-sum liability limit per event, shared with bodily injury and pure financial loss claims; there is no separate per-item sublimit.

Defence Against Unfounded Claims

Covered

If claims against the policyholder are unfounded, Mecklenburgische defends against them at its own cost (also where a claim is unfounded only as to its amount) and is authorised to settle or defend claims in the policyholder's name. A separate, optional traffic legal protection product (Verkehrs-Rechtsschutz) for the policyholder's own disputes and traffic offences is offered at a discounted rate with a deductible, but is a distinct add-on, not part of this liability defence.

International Insurance (Green) Card

Covered

Where Mecklenburgische has issued an International Insurance (Green) Card, MTPL and Kasko cover extend, free of additional premium, to the non-European countries named on the card, unless the country name is struck through.

Roadside Assistance (Autoschutzbrief)

Optional

Only in Autoschutzbrief

Optional, separately contracted roadside assistance (Autoschutzbrief) covers breakdown and accident help, e.g. up to €150 for on-site breakdown assistance and up to €200 for towing (both unlimited if reported via the 24/7 emergency hotline), full-cost vehicle recovery/salvage, plus further travel-related benefits such as replacement transport, overnight stays and repatriation.

Driver Accident Cover (Fahrer-Versicherung)

€15,000,000

Only in Komfortdeckung

Available only with the optional Komfortdeckung upgrade, the Fahrer-Versicherung compensates the driver's own bodily injury sustained in an accident while driving the insured car, up to the bodily-injury liability sum insured (up to €15 million); self-employed drivers instead receive a capped daily loss-of-earnings benefit (1/360 of the statutory pension contribution ceiling) from the seventh week after the accident.

Passenger (Occupant) Liability Cover

€15,000,000

Authorised occupants of the insured car (excluding hire cars, taxis and self-drive rental vehicles) are co-insured persons under the MTPL policy and their bodily injury is covered within the same liability sum (up to €15 million per injured person); statutory minimum sums apply to occupants of a co-insured trailer. A separate, standalone traffic accident insurance (Verkehrs-Unfallversicherung) with fixed benefit amounts can additionally be taken out, but no specific sums for that product were found in the sources.

Key conditions

Territorial scope

Cover applies within the geographical borders of Europe and the non-European territories belonging to the EU; the scope follows the visited country's legally required minimum cover, but at least the policyholder's own contractual scope.

Green card rules

If Mecklenburgische has issued an International Insurance (Green) Card, MTPL and Kasko cover extend to the non-European countries listed on the card, provided the country name is not struck through.

Driver restrictions

The vehicle may only be used to the agreed purpose and driven by an authorised driver holding the legally required driving licence; the vehicle must not be driven, and the policyholder, keeper or owner must not allow it to be driven, by anyone whose ability to safely control it is impaired by alcohol or other intoxicants.

Claim notification deadline

The policyholder must notify Mecklenburgische of any loss event that could give rise to a claim within one week of becoming aware of it.

Bonus-malus rules

Premiums follow a no-claims discount (Schadenfreiheitsrabatt) system with classes ranging from M (worst) up to SF 50 (best, for cars); a fully claim-free calendar year moves the contract up one class, while one or more claims in a year trigger a downgrade according to fixed tables based on the number of claims.
