Direct payment

The insurer settles justified third-party compensation claims directly in cash and is authorised to satisfy or defend claims asserted against the policyholder in the policyholder's name; unjustified claims (in whole or in part) are rejected at the insurer's own expense.

Geographic scope

Europe (geographical boundaries) plus non-European territories belonging to the EU

Cover applies within the geographical boundaries of Europe and non-European territories belonging to the EU. The scope follows the level of cover legally required in the country visited, but at least the level agreed in the contract. If the insurer has issued an International Insurance Card (Green Card), cover also extends to the non-European countries listed on it unless crossed out; the geographic scope can be further extended by separate agreement.

Unique selling points

  • Combined third-party liability sum of up to EUR 100 million for property and financial loss plus up to EUR 15 million per injured person, well above Germany's statutory minimum limits.
  • Optional Autoschutzbrief provides Europe-wide breakdown and accident assistance including medical repatriation and trip-cancellation cost cover, addable to every tariff.
  • Werkstattservice partner garages grant an extra 3-year repair warranty plus a free interior cleaning after every claim-related repair.
  • Optional Rabattschutz keeps the no-claims class from dropping after one claim per year in the Komfort and Premium tariffs.
  • Fahrerschutzversicherung compensates the driver's own injury losses—including lost income, disability-related home conversions, and a survivor's pension—up to the same sum insured as the liability cover.

Coverage limits

Bodily injury liability

€15,000,000

Liability cover of up to EUR 15 million per injured person for bodily injury, forming part of the combined lump-sum insured amount of EUR 100 million (which also covers property and financial loss) per claim event. Uniform across the Basis and Komfort MTPL tariffs.

Source

Property and financial-loss liability

€100,000,000

Combined lump-sum liability cover of EUR 100 million pauschal per event for property damage and pure financial loss together with bodily injury (bodily injury sub-limited to EUR 15 million per injured person); this is not an additional 100M on top of the bodily-injury sum but the same overall event limit. Uniform across the Basis and Komfort MTPL tariffs.

Defence against unjustified claims

Covered

The insurer defends against unjustified or partially unjustified third-party compensation claims at its own cost as an integral part of MTPL cover; this is not a separate legal-expenses product with its own sum insured.

Source

International Insurance Card (Green Card)

Covered

Where issued, the International Insurance Card extends MTPL cover to the non-European countries listed on it, unless the country name is crossed out.

Source

Autoschutzbrief (roadside/travel assistance)

Optional

Optional add-on ('auf Wunsch') to the MTPL contract, available with both the Basis and Komfort tariffs, providing Europe-wide breakdown, accident, illness and repatriation assistance (e.g. recovery up to EUR 100, towing up to EUR 150–2,500 depending on case, medical repatriation, trip-cancellation cost cover). Can only be taken out together with an MTPL contract.

Source

Fahrerschutzversicherung (driver protection)

€15,000,000

Optional cover, purchasable only together with MTPL for a car or camper van, compensating the driver's own personal-injury losses as if a third party were fully liable (excluding pain-and-suffering and bereavement payments). Benefit per event is capped at the MTPL sum insured for the vehicle (max. EUR 15 million).

Source

Kfz-Unfallversicherung / Insassenschutz (passenger accident)

Optional

Optional accident cover for vehicle occupants, sold as its own legally separate contract alongside MTPL; sums insured (invalidity, hospital daily benefit, death benefit) are individually agreed and shown on the policy schedule, not fixed by the AKB. Under the flat-rate ('Pauschalsystem') option, the sum insured increases by 50% and is divided among all occupants when two or more are in the vehicle.

Key conditions

Territorial scope

Cover applies within the geographical boundaries of Europe and non-European territories belonging to the EU; the scope of cover follows the level legally required in the country visited, but at least the level agreed in the contract. The territorial scope can be extended by separate agreement.

Green card rules

If the insurer has issued the International Insurance Card (Green Card), cover also extends to the non-European countries listed on the card, provided the country name is not crossed out.

Driver restrictions

The vehicle may only be used by an authorised driver holding the necessary valid driving licence; the policyholder, keeper or owner may not knowingly allow use by an unauthorised or unlicensed driver, and the vehicle may not be driven under the influence of alcohol or other intoxicants. Occasional use by a third party (e.g. a prospective buyer, garage mechanic, inspection-body staff or hotel employee acting in that role) is exempt from usual driver-circle restrictions but such drivers must still be at least 23 years old where an age-based tariff condition applies.

Claim notification deadline

Any event that may lead to a claim must be reported to the insurer within one week. If a third-party claim is asserted against the policyholder in court (e.g. summons, order for payment), this must be reported immediately.

Bonus-malus rules

The contract is rated under a no-claims class (SF-Klasse) system re-assessed each 1 January based on the previous calendar year's claims history. For cars, MTPL premium rates range from SF 50 (15% of base rate) down to SF 1 (53%), class 0 (86%) and class M (98%); a claim triggers a downgrade per fixed tables. A first claim of up to EUR 500 in a calendar year can be voluntarily reimbursed to the insurer within six months to avoid a downgrade. An optional 'Rabattschutz' add-on (available only with the Komfort or Premium tariffs together with the Autoschutzbrief/comprehensive cover, not with Basis) prevents a downgrade after one claim per calendar year, provided both the MTPL and comprehensive contracts are rated at least SF-Klasse 5 and no claim has yet occurred that year.
