Online purchase

Direct payment

VGH settles justified third-party claims in cash directly to the claimant and defends unjustified claims (including claims unjustified in amount) at its own expense; VGH is authorised to satisfy or reject claims asserted against the policyholder in the policyholder's name.

Geographic scope

Geographic Europe and non-European territories belonging to the European Union

Coverage applies within the geographic boundaries of Europe and the non-European territories of the EU. The scope follows the legally mandated minimum coverage of the country visited, at least matching the scope of the German contract. Coverage can be extended to further non-European countries listed on the International Insurance Card (Green Card), unless the country name is crossed out.

Unique selling points

  • Liability coverage of up to EUR 15 million per injured person and EUR 100 million lump sum for property/financial damage, well above the German statutory minimum.
  • The Komfort tariff includes the Mallorca-Police, extending liability cover to temporarily rented vehicles abroad free of charge.
  • Motor environmental damage insurance (Kfz-Umweltschadenversicherung) is included free of charge alongside the high-sum liability policy.
  • Small claims up to EUR 500 can be settled privately and reported later, helping policyholders protect their no-claims class.
  • In case of a fire in an electric or plug-in hybrid vehicle, VGH covers the costs of transport and storage in a special water container, including contaminated water disposal.

Coverage limits

Bodily Injury Liability

€15,000,000

VGH indemnifies the policyholder against claims for bodily injury caused to third parties through use of the vehicle, up to a maximum of EUR 15 million per injured person, within the overall lump-sum liability sum of EUR 100 million for personal, property and financial loss combined.

Source

Property and Financial Loss Liability

€100,000,000

VGH indemnifies the policyholder against claims for property damage and pure financial loss caused to third parties through use of the vehicle, under a lump-sum liability limit of EUR 100 million per event for property and financial damage combined.

Passive Legal Defence Against Unjustified Claims

Covered

VGH defends unjustified claims (including claims unjustified in amount) against the policyholder at its own cost, conducts any resulting litigation in the policyholder's name via its own appointed lawyer, and is authorised to make all declarations it deems appropriate to settle or reject claims.

International Insurance Card (Green Card)

Covered

Where VGH has issued the International Insurance Card, liability coverage extends beyond Europe/EU to the non-European countries listed on the card, provided the country name is not crossed out; the scope of protection in the visited country follows the legally mandated local minimum.

Source

Roadside Assistance (Autoschutzbrief)

Optional

Optional add-on ('auf Wunsch' in both the Basis and Komfort tariff) that can only be taken out together with the Kfz-Haftpflichtversicherung. Provides breakdown, accident and theft assistance across Europe and EU territories with individual sub-limits (e.g. EUR 100 for on-site breakdown repair, up to EUR 2,500 for recovery of campers/vans, up to EUR 350 for a 7-day replacement vehicle).

Source

Driver Protection (Fahrerschutzversicherung)

€15,000,000

Optional cover that can be added alongside a Kfz-Haftpflichtversicherung for a Pkw or camper, compensating the driver's own bodily-injury losses from an at-fault accident as if a third party were fully liable; the insurer's payment per event is capped at the per-person liability sum agreed for the vehicle (max. EUR 15 million).

Source

Passenger/Occupant Accident Insurance (Kfz-Unfallversicherung / Insassenschutz)

Optional

Optional accident cover for the driver and all authorised occupants of the vehicle for accidents directly connected to its use (invalidity, hospital daily allowance, death benefit); the specific insured sums are individually agreed and shown on the policy schedule rather than fixed in the terms.

Key conditions

Territorial scope

Liability coverage applies within the geographic borders of Europe and the non-European territories of the EU; the scope follows the legally required minimum coverage of the country visited, but at least the scope of the German contract.

Green card rules

If VGH has issued the International Insurance Card (Green Card), coverage extends to the non-European countries listed on the card, provided the country name has not been crossed out.

Driver restrictions

A natural person may only conclude the contract if they hold the driving licence appropriate to their age for the insured vehicle; the vehicle may only be used by a driver authorised by the party entitled to dispose of it and who holds the required licence.

Claim notification deadline

The policyholder must notify VGH of any event that could lead to a claim within one week; a report made to VGH's accident and breakdown emergency call centre is deemed valid for the entire motor insurance.

Bonus-malus rules

Premiums follow the No-Claims Discount (Schadenfreiheitsrabatt/SF-Klassen) system: new contracts start in class 0 (or a special starting class under defined conditions), move up one class per claim-free calendar year, and are set back after an at-fault claim according to fixed tables; an optional 'Rabattschutz' add-on can protect the class from the first claim in a year if the contract is rated at least SF-class 5 in both liability and comprehensive cover.
