Direct payment

Justified damage claims are settled in cash; the insurer holds settlement authority (Regulierungsvollmacht) to satisfy or reject third-party claims in the policyholder's name, and injured parties may also assert claims directly against the insurer.

Geographic scope

Europe and the non-European territories of the European Union

Cover applies within the geographical borders of Europe and the non-European territories belonging to the EU, following at least the compulsory insurance scope of the visited country; extends to non-European countries listed on a valid Green Card.

Unique selling points

  • Even the entry-level KompaktSchutz tier already includes the maximum available liability sums (EUR 100m / EUR 15m per injured person).
  • Mallorca cover for accidents caused with a car rented abroad is included free of charge in both KompaktSchutz and PremiumSchutz.
  • PremiumSchutz adds a free Ausland-Schadenschutz that compensates the policyholder's own damages after accidents abroad caused by an at-fault third party.
  • A Leistungsupdate-Garantie automatically extends future benefit improvements to existing policyholders in the same product line without any additional premium.
  • The insurer promotes its motor claims service as recognised for 'fairest claims settlement' (Focus Money) on its product pages.

Coverage limits

Bodily Injury Liability

€100,000,000

Part of a combined (pauschal) EUR 100 million liability sum covering personal injury, property damage and pure financial loss together; personal injury is additionally capped at EUR 15 million per injured person. The statutory minimum sums may alternatively be agreed instead of this pauschal sum.

Source

Property Damage Liability

€100,000,000

Part of the same combined EUR 100 million pauschal liability sum shared with bodily injury and pure financial loss; no separate sub-limit is set specifically for property damage.

Defence Against Unfounded Claims

Covered

The insurer defends the policyholder against unfounded or excessive third-party claims at its own expense; this forms part of the liability cover and carries no separate sum insured.

Source

International (Green) Card

Covered

If a Green Card valid on the date of the accident has been issued, cover extends to the non-European countries listed on the card (unless crossed out), at least at the level required by the visited country, but never less than this policy's own scope.

Roadside Assistance / Breakdown Cover

Optional

Not included in the Kfz-Haftpflicht baustein itself; roadside and breakdown assistance is offered as a separate, legally independent optional 'Schutzbrief' contract available in KompaktSchutz and PremiumSchutz versions alongside the liability policy.

Source

Driver Accident Cover

Optional

Injury or death of the policyholder's own driver while driving is not covered by the Kfz-Haftpflicht baustein; it is available as a separate optional 'Fahrer-Schutzversicherung' baustein, which compensates the driver's personal injury as if a third party were liable, up to the liability policy's personal-injury sum.

Source

Passenger Accident Cover

Optional

Not part of the Kfz-Haftpflicht baustein; a separate optional 'Kfz-Unfallversicherung' product is referenced in the insurer's product information document, paying agreed lump sums for invalidity or death of vehicle occupants after a traffic accident.

Key conditions

Territorial scope

Cover applies within the geographical borders of Europe and the non-European territories belonging to the EU, at least to the extent legally required in the visited country, but never less than this contract's own scope.

Green card rules

If a Green Card valid for the accident date has been issued, cover extends to the non-European countries listed on it that are not crossed out, at the scope described under territorial scope.

Driver restrictions

The vehicle may only be used for the agreed purpose and only by an authorised driver holding the required driving licence; it must not be driven, or lent to a driver, under the influence of alcohol or other intoxicants unfit to drive safely. Breach of these duties can lead to full or partial loss of cover.

Claim notification deadline

Any event that may lead to a claim must be reported to the insurer within one week; claims already asserted against the policyholder out of court must likewise be reported within one week of being raised.

Bonus-malus rules

Premiums follow a no-claims (Schadenfreiheits-/SF) class system based on the claim-free, uninterrupted contract duration; a claim-free calendar year moves the contract to the next better SF class, while one or more claims trigger a downgrade per a fixed table, down to class M after four or more claims in a year.
