Direct payment

Medical costs are generally reimbursed to the insured person, but if the treating hospital does not accept the insurer's cost-assumption declaration, Europ Assistance pays a local service provider directly on the insured person's behalf.

Geographic scope

Worldwide, with exclusions for Germany (under the medical module), the insured person's country of habitual residence or registered employment, and certain sanctioned countries

The medical module (Auslandskrankenversicherung) applies worldwide once the insured person has left Germany, but excludes Germany itself and any country where the insured person has their habitual residence or is registered as an employee. No cover is granted in Iran, Syria, North Korea, Crimea, Zaporizhzhia, Kherson, Donetsk and Luhansk regions, Venezuela, Belarus, the Russian Federation, Afghanistan and Myanmar (Burma) due to international sanctions.

Unique selling points

  • Bundled 'all-inclusive' package combining trip cancellation, overseas medical cover and baggage protection in a single policy
  • Free choice between single-trip and annual multi-trip cover, plus single, couple and family tariffs
  • Pandemic and epidemic illnesses such as COVID-19 are covered as standard rather than excluded
  • The underlying annual trip-cancellation cover was rated 'Sehr gut (1.3)' by Stiftung Warentest for both individuals and families
  • 24-hour, 365-day emergency assistance hotline for medical and travel emergencies

Key conditions

Assistance call deadline

Before being transported back home under the domestic (within-Germany) repatriation module, the insured person must inform the insurer in advance. The policy does not set a separate fixed notification deadline for first contacting the 24h emergency line.

Unauthorized treatment

The insurer reduces reimbursement for medical costs that are clearly disproportionate to the service rendered, and does not cover treatment or medication that was not prescribed by a doctor or that exceeds the medically necessary scope.

Purchase while abroad

All insured persons, including the policyholder, must have their habitual residence in Germany at the time the contract is taken out. The medical module only starts once the insured person has left Germany; according to CosmosDirekt's product pages, cover can be taken out up until immediately before departure.

Chronic conditions

No medical cover applies if, before departure, a doctor had already determined that the insured person would need treatment or medication for an existing/chronic condition during the trip, unless the condition unexpectedly worsens during the trip or travel occurs due to the death of a close relative.

Pregnancy

Pregnancy complications, medically necessary termination, miscarriage, stillbirth and premature birth before the 37th week are covered (including the newborn); a normal delivery after the 36th week without complications is not covered.

Pre-existing condition exclusions

Costs relating to a condition known before the trip, for which a doctor had already indicated treatment or medication would be needed prior to departure, are excluded from the medical module, subject to limited exceptions such as unexpected worsening during the trip.

Coverage duration limit

Cover applies to each trip for a maximum of 60 days; for longer trips, only the first 60 days are covered, unless the return is delayed for reasons beyond the insured person's control (e.g. medical inability to travel).
