CosmosDirekt (Cosmos Lebensversicherungs-AG and Cosmos Versicherung AG)
CosmosDirekt
CosmosDirekt is a travel insurance for the Germany market with online purchase and 24/7 assistance.
Direct payment
Medical costs are generally reimbursed to the insured person, but if the treating hospital does not accept the insurer's cost-assumption declaration, Europ Assistance pays a local service provider directly on the insured person's behalf.
Geographic scope
Worldwide, with exclusions for Germany (under the medical module), the insured person's country of habitual residence or registered employment, and certain sanctioned countries
The medical module (Auslandskrankenversicherung) applies worldwide once the insured person has left Germany, but excludes Germany itself and any country where the insured person has their habitual residence or is registered as an employee. No cover is granted in Iran, Syria, North Korea, Crimea, Zaporizhzhia, Kherson, Donetsk and Luhansk regions, Venezuela, Belarus, the Russian Federation, Afghanistan and Myanmar (Burma) due to international sanctions.

Coverage limits
Medical expenses abroad
Covered
Covers medically necessary outpatient and inpatient treatment, medication, remedies and aids during a trip abroad. No overall monetary ceiling is stated in the policy for medically necessary treatment.
Emergency medical treatment
Covered
Covers teleconsultation and outpatient treatment/operations by a doctor or medical staff abroad; no monetary cap is stated.
Hospitalization
Covered
Covers hospital treatment/operations, accommodation and meals, and travel costs of a visit by a close person if the stay exceeds five days. As an alternative to cost reimbursement, a flat daily benefit of EUR 50 per day of inpatient treatment can be chosen instead.
Outpatient treatment
Covered
Covers outpatient treatments and operations by a doctor and medical staff, as well as alternative treatment methods and medicines where equally promising and no conventional care is available, capped at the cost of conventional treatment.
Emergency dental treatment
Covered
Covers pain-relieving dental treatment, simple fillings, repairs of inlays, dentures/prostheses and fixed braces, and provisional dentures; no monetary cap is stated.
Local medical transport
Covered
Covers transport to the nearest suitable hospital or doctor, transfer for further treatment, and transport back to accommodation, plus companion costs. Other transport (e.g. taxi) is reimbursed up to EUR 50 per claim.
Medical repatriation from abroad
Covered
Covers repatriation to the nearest suitable hospital at the insured person's home in Germany when adequate local treatment is unavailable, when medically sensible, or after more than 14 days of inpatient care; includes a medically necessary or non-necessary companion and transport of baggage. No monetary cap is stated.
Repatriation of remains
Covered
In case of death abroad, covers transport of the body to the place of burial in Germany, local cremation and transport of the urn to Germany, or burial abroad up to the cost that a repatriation would have incurred, plus transport of baggage to Germany.
Search, rescue or recovery
€10,000
Covers costs up to EUR 10,000 for search, rescue or recovery following an illness, injury or death, both abroad and on trips within Germany.
COVID-19 / pandemic and epidemic infections
Covered
Epidemic and pandemic infections such as COVID-19 are treated as an ordinary illness and covered under the medical module; boarding/entry refusal or a personally ordered quarantine due to suspected infection is also covered under the trip-cancellation module.
Pre-existing / already-known conditions
Excluded
No medical cover is provided if, before departure, a doctor had already determined that the insured person would need treatment or medication during the trip. Exceptions apply if the condition unexpectedly worsens during the trip, if the trip is undertaken due to the death of a parent, child or partner, or for pregnancy complications arising despite travelling against medical advice.
Pregnancy complications
Covered
Covers medical care for pregnancy complications, a medically necessary termination, miscarriage or stillbirth, and premature birth before the 37th week (including care for the newborn). A normal delivery after the 36th week without complications is not covered unless return travel was prevented for another covered reason.
Personal liability abroad
No limit stated
No personal liability insurance module is included in this product.
Legal assistance abroad
Covered
If threatened with detention or arrested abroad, the insurer helps arrange a lawyer and interpreter and advances up to EUR 2,500 for court, attorney and interpreter costs and up to EUR 12,500 for bail. These amounts are interest-free advances to be repaid within three months, not an indemnity payment.
24/7 emergency assistance
Covered
A 24-hour, 365-day emergency hotline is available for medical and travel emergencies, information and organizational support before and during the trip.
Winter sports cover
No limit stated
No specific winter sports coverage or exclusion is mentioned in the policy documents.
Adventure / extreme sports cover
No limit stated
No specific adventure or extreme sports module is mentioned. Professional athletes are excluded for injuries sustained in competition, but participation in amateur club competitions and related training is covered under the medical module.
Key conditions
Assistance call deadline
Before being transported back home under the domestic (within-Germany) repatriation module, the insured person must inform the insurer in advance. The policy does not set a separate fixed notification deadline for first contacting the 24h emergency line.
Unauthorized treatment
The insurer reduces reimbursement for medical costs that are clearly disproportionate to the service rendered, and does not cover treatment or medication that was not prescribed by a doctor or that exceeds the medically necessary scope.
Purchase while abroad
All insured persons, including the policyholder, must have their habitual residence in Germany at the time the contract is taken out. The medical module only starts once the insured person has left Germany; according to CosmosDirekt's product pages, cover can be taken out up until immediately before departure.
Chronic conditions
No medical cover applies if, before departure, a doctor had already determined that the insured person would need treatment or medication for an existing/chronic condition during the trip, unless the condition unexpectedly worsens during the trip or travel occurs due to the death of a close relative.
Pregnancy
Pregnancy complications, medically necessary termination, miscarriage, stillbirth and premature birth before the 37th week are covered (including the newborn); a normal delivery after the 36th week without complications is not covered.
Pre-existing condition exclusions
Costs relating to a condition known before the trip, for which a doctor had already indicated treatment or medication would be needed prior to departure, are excluded from the medical module, subject to limited exceptions such as unexpected worsening during the trip.
Coverage duration limit
Cover applies to each trip for a maximum of 60 days; for longer trips, only the first 60 days are covered, unless the return is delayed for reasons beyond the insured person's control (e.g. medical inability to travel).
