Direct payment

ERGO issues a guarantee of payment directly to the treating hospital and settles medically necessary treatment costs directly with the provider, so travelers generally do not need to pay upfront and seek reimbursement afterwards.

Geographic scope

Worldwide

Coverage applies to medical treatment outside the traveler's country of habitual residence ('Ausland'); a reduced set of benefits (psychological assistance, medical/baggage repatriation, search & rescue costs, hospital-stay assistance) also applies to domestic trips within Germany of more than 50 km from home or including an overnight stay.

Unique selling points

  • Unlimited sum insured for inpatient and outpatient medical treatment, hospitalization and medically necessary repatriation abroad.
  • 24/7, 365-day emergency call center staffed by an international medical team that communicates in around 12 languages and liaises with treating doctors and the traveler's own GP.
  • Option to take a €50 per day hospital cash benefit for up to 30 days instead of claiming reimbursement of inpatient treatment costs.
  • Unlimited number of trips covered per year under a single annual policy, rather than needing to insure each trip separately.
  • Covers day trips and weekend getaways from just 50 km from home, including domestic travel within Germany, not only trips abroad.

Key conditions

Assistance call deadline

The insured person (or, in case of death, their legal successor) must contact the ERV emergency call center without delay before starting inpatient treatment, before a medical repatriation is carried out, and before a burial or repatriation of remains abroad.

Unauthorized treatment

ERGO is not obliged to pay if a duty (such as the notification duty) is breached intentionally; in case of gross negligence, the benefit can be reduced according to the severity of fault, unless the policyholder proves the breach was not causal for the loss or its extent.

Purchase while abroad

To conclude an annual contract, the policyholder (and any co-insured person) must have their habitual residence or company seat in Germany or another EU/EEA country; the terms reviewed do not explicitly address purchasing this annual policy while already staying abroad.

Chronic conditions

Treatments known before the trip to be necessary during the trip (e.g. dialysis) and treatments that were a reason for undertaking the trip are excluded, except when the trip had to be undertaken due to the death of a spouse, partner or first-degree relative.

Pregnancy

Pregnancy complications, medically indicated termination, delivery, premature birth treatment for the newborn, and miscarriage are covered up to and including the 36th week of pregnancy.

Pre-existing condition exclusions

Treatments that were the reason for the trip, or that the traveler already knew before departure would need to be carried out during the trip, are not covered.

Coverage duration limit

Under the annual policy, medical cover (outside the cancellation and interruption parts) applies for a maximum of the first 45 days of each individual trip; coverage ends after day 45 if the trip continues longer.
