Direct payment

Outpatient costs are generally paid by the traveler first and reimbursed afterwards; direct billing with the hospital is possible for inpatient treatment where locally feasible, and if the trip home / treatment is organized through INTER's medical service, costs are settled directly and reimbursed in full.

Geographic scope

Worldwide, except Germany and the country of the insured person's habitual residence

Cover applies to individual trips abroad up to a maximum of 56 days each; unlimited number of trips per year under the annual policy

Unique selling points

  • No deductible applies across all benefit areas (outpatient, inpatient, dental, transport).
  • Unlimited reimbursement of repatriation costs when the trip home is organized through INTER's own medical service.
  • Accidents from extreme sports, including diving, are covered with no exclusion, unlike many competing policies.
  • 24/7 telemedicine access to German-speaking doctors plus round-the-clock emergency medical assistance service.
  • Coverage can be bought online right up to departure, starting from as little as EUR 9 per year.

Emergency dental treatment

unlimited

Pain-relieving dental treatment and simple fillings, plus urgently necessary repairs of dentures/orthodontic appliances, are reimbursed at 100%; the new manufacture of dentures, crowns or orthodontic appliances is not covered.

Medical repatriation/evacuation

Not established from the insurer's documents

Repatriation is covered when medically necessary or sensible/economically justified (e.g. treatment standards abroad are inadequate, hospitalization would exceed 14 days, or repatriation costs are lower than further treatment abroad). If organized by INTER's medical service, costs are reimbursed in full without limit; otherwise reimbursement is capped at EUR 5,000 for repatriation from within Europe and EUR 10,000 from outside Europe.

Repatriation of remains / funeral costs

Not established from the insurer's documents

If the insured dies abroad, costs of repatriation to Germany, Switzerland or the EEA state of last habitual residence are reimbursed at 100%; if not repatriated, local burial costs up to the equivalent repatriation cost are covered, plus travel costs (economy class) for a relative to attend the funeral.

Search, rescue and recovery

Not established from the insurer's documents

If an insured person falls ill or is injured abroad and must be searched for, rescued or recovered by a rescue service, costs are reimbursed up to EUR 10,000.

COVID-19 treatment

unlimited

INTER's ReiseAV terms (AVB) do not list pandemics as a general exclusion, so COVID-19 illness is treated like any other acute illness abroad: 100% of medically necessary treatment and return transport costs are covered without deductible. A pandemic-related travel warning is explicitly not an exclusion ground, unlike war-event warnings.

Source

Pre-existing conditions

Not established from the insurer's documents

Cover only applies to illnesses/accidents occurring acutely abroad; treatments that were foreseeable/planned at the time the trip was booked, or that were the reason for the trip, are excluded.

Winter sports cover

unlimited

Accidents during winter sports activities (e.g. skiing) are covered under the standard 100% medical expense reimbursement, with no sports-related exclusion in the terms.

Source

Extreme/adventure sports cover

unlimited

Unlike many competitors, INTER does not exclude accidents from extreme sports, explicitly including diving accidents, within the standard cover.

Pregnancy complications

Not established from the insurer's documents

Pregnancy complications, including premature birth before completion of the 36th week of pregnancy, and miscarriage, are treated as insured events and covered; routine pregnancy check-ups and normal childbirth are excluded.

Personal liability

Excluded

The INTER Auslandsreisekrankenversicherung (ReiseAV) is a pure travel-medical product; its listed benefits cover doctor/dental/hospital treatment, rescue costs (up to €10,000), and medical repatriation only. Personal liability protection is not part of this product's benefit list and must be obtained via a separate personal/travel liability policy.

Legal assistance

Excluded

The INTER Auslandsreisekrankenversicherung (ReiseAV) benefit schedule is limited to medical treatment, rescue/recovery costs (up to €10,000), and medically necessary repatriation abroad. Legal assistance/legal protection is not among the covered benefits of this travel-medical product.

Key conditions

Assistance call deadline

The policy must be concluded before the trip abroad begins; it cannot be purchased once the insured has already departed, though it can be bought online right up until departure.

Chronic conditions

Cover is limited to acutely occurring illnesses and accidents abroad; chronic or known pre-existing conditions and treatments planned before departure are not covered.

Pregnancy

Only pregnancy complications, miscarriage, and premature birth before the 36th week are covered as insured events; routine pregnancy check-ups and normal childbirth are excluded.

Pre-existing condition exclusions

Treatments that were already foreseeable or planned by medical diagnosis at the time of departure are excluded, unless the trip was undertaken due to the death of a spouse/partner or first-degree relative.
