Itzehoer Insurance / Brandgilde von 1691 Mutual Insurance Association
Itzehoer Versicherungen
Itzehoer Versicherungen is a travel insurance for the Germany market with online purchase and 24/7 assistance.
Direct payment
In case of inpatient treatment, HanseMerkur's worldwide 24-hour emergency service can issue a direct cost-guarantee to the hospital so the insured does not need to pay upfront.
Geographic scope
Temporary stay in Germany, plus travel to EU member states, Schengen states, Andorra, Monaco, San Marino and Vatican City; home country is excluded
Coverage applies during the temporary stay in Germany and for trips into the EU/Schengen area, Andorra, Monaco, San Marino and Vatican City, but not in the insured person's home (permanent residence) country; for contracts of at least 12 months, temporary return trips home are covered up to a total of 6 weeks
Unique selling points
- Travel and long-term travel health insurance from this cooperation have repeatedly been recognized as top-rated / award-winning in the market.
- Marketed as a 'test winner' insurer for travel protection.
- The policy can be concluded entirely online, including after the insured has already entered Germany.
- A worldwide 24-hour hotline can issue a direct cashless cost-guarantee to hospitals so insureds do not need to pay upfront.
- Free choice of doctors and hospitals allows treatment as a private patient abroad rather than being limited to statutory-insurance providers.
Coverage limits
Medical treatment costs
Covered
Outpatient and inpatient medically necessary treatment is reimbursed at 100% after a 25 EUR deductible per insured event; no overall monetary ceiling is stated for these benefit categories.
Emergency/unavoidable inpatient treatment
Covered
Unavoidable inpatient treatment in the general ward (multi-bed room), without elective private-doctor services, including board and nursing, is reimbursed at 100%.
Hospitalization / inpatient treatment
Covered
Inpatient treatment costs are reimbursed at 100%. As an alternative, the insured may instead choose a daily hospital cash benefit of 75 EUR/day for up to 14 days, decided at the start of hospitalization.
Outpatient treatment
Covered
Outpatient medical treatment costs are reimbursed at 100% (subject to the general 25 EUR per-event deductible).
Emergency dental treatment
€1,000
Pain-relieving conservative dental treatment, simple fillings and repairs of existing dentures are reimbursed up to 1,000 EUR per insurance year. Full dentures/prosthetics are reimbursed separately at 80% up to 1,250 EUR per insurance year, and preventive dental check-ups up to 200 EUR per insurance year.
Medical transport (to/from hospital)
Covered
Transport to the nearest suitable hospital and back to accommodation is reimbursed at 100% for both outpatient and inpatient cases.
Medically necessary repatriation transport
Covered
If medically sensible and justifiable, or if the hospital stay in Germany would exceed 14 days, or continued treatment in Germany would cost more than repatriation, HanseMerkur organizes and pays 100% of the repatriation transport to the insured's home country using the most cost-effective suitable means of transport.
Repatriation of remains / burial abroad
€10,000
If the insured person dies, HanseMerkur organizes and pays up to 10,000 EUR for repatriation of the body to the permanent place of residence, or alternatively for burial in the country of travel (capped at the cost that repatriation would have caused).
COVID-19 treatment
No limit stated
Not separately addressed in the 2023 terms and conditions (no explicit COVID-19 clause).
Pre-existing conditions
€30,000
For illnesses, complaints and accident consequences known within the last 6 months before the start of coverage (or extension), the insured bears a 5,000 EUR excess per insured event, and benefits for these are capped at 30,000 EUR per insured person for the entire contract term.
Adventure sports cover
No limit stated
Not mentioned in this policy's terms and conditions; professional athletes are excluded from insurability.
Pregnancy complications
Conditional
Costs for examinations and treatment due to pregnancy complications, miscarriage, and delivery before completion of the 36th week of pregnancy are reimbursed at 100%, provided the need for treatment was not already established when the contract began.
Personal liability abroad
Excluded
Not covered under this travel medical policy; travel liability is sold by Itzehoer/HanseMerkur as part of a separate liability/accident package for foreign guests, not within this medical terms document.
24/7 emergency assistance hotline
Covered
A worldwide 24-hour emergency service is available at all times to help with claims, hospital cost-guarantees and organizing repatriation.
Key conditions
Assistance call deadline
Immediate contact with the emergency service is required before extensive diagnostic/therapeutic measures in case of inpatient treatment, before non-emergency dental prosthesis treatment (a cost plan must be submitted first), and before any repatriation transport.
Unauthorized treatment
Breach of contractual obligations (e.g. failing to notify the emergency service, not cooperating in claims handling) can result in full or partial loss of benefits, in line with §28 VVG.
Purchase while abroad
The contract can be concluded at any time, and per Itzehoer's product page, this travel protection for foreign guests can also be taken out after entering Germany.
Chronic conditions
Chronic illnesses are generally covered as ordinary insured events, but if known within 6 months before the start of cover, the pre-existing-condition excess (5,000 EUR per event, 30,000 EUR total cap) applies.
Pregnancy
Pregnancy and delivery are covered as an insured event if the pregnancy had not yet begun when the contract started; after a 6-month waiting period, prenatal check-ups and delivery are reimbursed at 100%, and complications/miscarriage/premature birth before the 36th week are covered at 100% without the waiting period if unforeseen at contract start.
Pre-existing condition exclusions
Illnesses, complaints or accident consequences known within the 6 months before the start of coverage or an extension are subject to a 5,000 EUR excess per insured event, with total benefits for these capped at 30,000 EUR per insured person for the whole contract term.
Coverage duration limit
The maximum insurance duration per contract is 1 year. If the stay in Germany is extended, further cover requires a new contract (subject to the insurer's explicit consent) within the maximum duration; if the extension is for reasons beyond the insured's control, the contract can be extended beyond the maximum duration on request. Treatment can also be extended up to 3 months beyond the agreed term if the insured is not yet fit to travel.
