Direct payment

SIGNAL IDUNA can issue a direct cost-guarantee to the treating hospital for eligible costs up to EUR 15,000 and settles the bill on behalf of the insured; if no advance arrangement is made via the 24-hour emergency line, the insured typically pays first and is reimbursed up to 100% of documented eligible costs.

Geographic scope

Worldwide, 24 hours a day, for the duration of the policy

Coverage does not apply in Germany or in any country where the insured person has a permanent residence or stays regularly for more than three months per year

Unique selling points

  • No deductible and no waiting period - full cost reimbursement from the moment the policy takes effect.
  • Children can be co-insured up to age 25 under the family tariff, well beyond the typical market limit.
  • 24/7 multilingual emergency hotline that organises treatment, hospital transfers and repatriation on the customer's behalf.
  • Direct cost-guarantee to hospitals up to EUR 15,000, so customers often do not need to pay treatment costs out of pocket.
  • Coverage continues for COVID-19 even after an official Federal Foreign Office travel warning is issued for the destination.

Key conditions

Assistance call deadline

The insured must contact the 24-hour emergency call centre without delay in the event of inpatient treatment and before the start of extensive diagnostic or therapeutic measures.

Unauthorized treatment

Intentional breach of contractual obligations (e.g. failing to notify the emergency line, submitting incomplete evidence) results in loss of cover; grossly negligent breaches allow the insurer to reduce benefits proportionately to the degree of fault, provided the insured was warned of these consequences in advance.

Purchase while abroad

The contract must be concluded before departure; if it is taken out while the insured is already abroad, cover only begins with the start of a new trip, not the ongoing one.

Chronic conditions

Chronic conditions are generally treated as pre-existing conditions and are excluded if a doctor determined before the trip that treatment would be needed during it; benefits are paid only for an unexpected acute worsening occurring despite fitness to travel at the start of the trip.

Pregnancy

Complications, medically necessary termination, delivery and miscarriage up to the 36th week are covered; if pregnancy occurred during the trip, up to five check-ups and two ultrasounds are additionally reimbursed.

Pre-existing condition exclusions

Treatment that was already foreseeable and planned before the trip, or conditions a doctor had determined would require treatment during the trip, are excluded from cover.

Coverage duration limit

Within one insurance year, cover applies to any number of trips up to a maximum of 65 days per private trip or 10 days per business trip; longer trips are only covered for the first 65 (or 10) days.
