URV – Union Reiseversicherung Aktiengesellschaft
URV
URV is a travel insurance for the Germany market with online purchase and 24/7 assistance.
Direct payment
The policy generally works on a reimbursement basis: original invoices and prescriptions must be submitted and costs are refunded within 2 weeks after the claim decision. For hospitalization and repatriation, URV directly arranges and settles costs with the treating hospital/transport provider once the 24-hour emergency service has been notified.
Geographic scope
Worldwide, outside Germany and the policyholder's country of residence
Cover applies only abroad; Germany and the country in which the insured person has a registered residence are not considered abroad.
Unique selling points
- No deductible on the international medical insurance component of the annual Travel Package.
- Unlimited number of trips per year, each protected for up to 56 days abroad under a single annual contract.
- Business and professional trips are automatically included alongside private travel in the annual package.
- Pandemic-related illness treatment costs are explicitly covered, overriding the standard pandemic exclusion.
- 24-hour, 7-days-a-week emergency hotline offering medical assistance nearly worldwide.
Coverage limits
Medical expenses
Not established from the insurer's documents
Covers medically necessary treatment abroad due to illness, accident or pregnancy complications, including doctor/dentist consultations, hospital treatment, prescribed medicines, remedies and aids. No specific sum insured ceiling is stated in the terms.
Emergency medical treatment
Not established from the insurer's documents
If the insured falls ill or has an accident abroad, medically necessary emergency treatment is covered; the insurance case begins with treatment and ends when no further need for treatment exists per medical findings.
Hospitalization
Not established from the insurer's documents
Inpatient hospital treatment abroad is covered, including surgery and related costs, plus accommodation/meals (and an accompanying person for minors). No cap is stated for the inpatient benefit itself; alternatively, if no reimbursement of inpatient costs is claimed, a hospital daily allowance of EUR 30 per day applies instead.
Outpatient treatment
Not established from the insurer's documents
Covers outpatient consultations and treatments by doctors, dentists, alternative practitioners, physiotherapists, chiropractors and osteopaths, plus prescribed medicines, remedies (e.g. physiotherapy, inhalations) and aids first needed during the trip. No sum insured ceiling is stated.
Emergency dental treatment
Not established from the insurer's documents
Pain-relieving dental treatment and simple fillings are covered, including provisional dentures and repairs to existing dentures/prostheses. New dentures, crowns and inlays are excluded. No sum insured ceiling is stated.
Medical transport abroad
Not established from the insurer's documents
Transport by rescue services (ambulance, air ambulance) to the nearest suitable hospital, and transfer to another hospital abroad when medically required, is covered without a stated cap. If transport is not via a rescue service (e.g. taxi), reimbursement is limited to EUR 30 per insurance case.
Medical repatriation to home country
Not established from the insurer's documents
URV organizes and covers the cost of a medically sensible and justifiable repatriation transport to Germany (or the insured's country of residence) when, e.g., inpatient treatment is expected to last more than 14 days or treatment costs abroad would exceed transport costs; costs for a necessary accompanying person and return of luggage are also covered.
Repatriation of remains / burial abroad
Not established from the insurer's documents
In case of death abroad, URV covers the cost of a burial abroad, or alternatively the cost of repatriation to the last permanent residence in Germany before crossing the border.
Search, rescue and recovery costs
Not established from the insurer's documents
If the insured has an accident and needs to be searched for, rescued or recovered by a public-law or private-law rescue service, costs are reimbursed up to a total of EUR 10,000.
COVID-19 / pandemic-related treatment
Not established from the insurer's documents
The general exclusion for pandemic-related damages does not apply to the medical insurance section: URV explicitly states it pays benefits for damages caused by pandemics under the Auslandsreise-Krankenversicherung, so illness treatment costs from a pandemic (e.g. COVID-19) are covered like any other illness abroad.
Pre-existing conditions
Not established from the insurer's documents
Treatment of an illness already diagnosed before the trip and known to have a considerable likelihood of worsening during the trip is excluded, unless the trip is taken because a spouse/registered partner or first-degree relative has died, or the deterioration of a chronic illness was unexpected.
Winter sports cover
Not established from the insurer's documents
The reviewed terms and conditions do not mention any specific winter sports provisions or exclusions.
Adventure sports cover
Not established from the insurer's documents
The reviewed terms and conditions do not mention any specific adventure sports provisions or exclusions.
Pregnancy complications
Not established from the insurer's documents
Medically necessary treatment for pregnancy complications is covered, specifically premature births, emergency terminations, and miscarriages. Routine pregnancy, normal childbirth and their consequences are excluded.
Personal liability
Not established from the insurer's documents
The Auslandsreise-Krankenversicherung (travel medical) section of this product does not include any personal liability cover.
Legal assistance
Not established from the insurer's documents
Legal/bail assistance (lawyer, interpreter, bail advances) is a benefit of the separate Notfall-Service-Versicherung component, not of the Auslandsreise-Krankenversicherung (travel medical) section.
24/7 emergency assistance
Not established from the insurer's documents
A 24-hour emergency call service is available nearly worldwide, 7 days a week, for medical assistance, arranging hospital/doctor contacts, repatriation and emergency childcare abroad.
Key conditions
Assistance call deadline
In case of inpatient hospital treatment, or before starting extensive diagnostic/therapeutic measures, the insured must contact the Notfall-Service immediately; in all other cases, contact can be made after returning home.
Unauthorized treatment
Intentional breach of the policy's duties (Obliegenheiten), such as failing to notify the emergency service, results in loss of cover; grossly negligent breaches allow URV to reduce the benefit proportionally to the degree of fault.
Purchase while abroad
The policyholder must have their permanent residence in Germany (or, for contracts of up to 4 months, declare the contract from within Germany while residing in the EU/EEA); cover under the travel medical section only begins upon crossing the border abroad, so the policy is intended to be concluded before departure, at booking, or within 30/7 days per the enrollment rules.
Chronic conditions
Unexpected deterioration of the health condition of chronic illnesses during the trip is covered, provided the deterioration was not already expected with considerable likelihood before departure.
Pregnancy
Only pregnancy complications requiring medically necessary treatment (premature birth, emergency termination, miscarriage) are covered; normal pregnancy, delivery and postpartum illnesses are excluded.
Pre-existing condition exclusions
Treatment of illnesses diagnosed before the trip, where a considerable likelihood of worsening during the trip was known, is excluded, with exceptions for the death of a close relative or unexpected chronic-illness deterioration.
Coverage duration limit
Cover under the annual policy applies to each individual trip abroad for up to 56 days; this period does not extend if a new insurance year begins during the trip, but is extended beyond 56 days if the insured cannot be transported home due to a covered medical condition.
