Direct payment

The policy operates on a reimbursement basis: the insured person pays medical bills abroad, then submits receipts (with certified translations if required) via the customer portal or by post, and the insurer transfers the reimbursement free of charge to a bank account in Germany; hospital treatment must be reported to the insurer immediately and any repatriation must be agreed with the insurer beforehand.

Geographic scope

Worldwide

Coverage applies worldwide, except in the country where the insured person has their domicile or habitual residence, and except in the Federal Republic of Germany.

Insured events (illness, accident consequences, pregnancy complications, death) that arise from an epidemic, pandemic or nuclear incident are explicitly treated as insured events under the same terms as other illnesses.

Source

Pre-existing conditions

Conditional

Insured events whose occurrence during the trip was already medically diagnosed/foreseeable before departure are excluded, unless there is an unexpected acute worsening of the existing illness during the stay abroad (no treatment, aside from routine check-ups, in the year before departure, and fitness to travel at departure) or the trip was undertaken due to the death of a spouse/partner or first-degree relative.

24/7 medical travel assistance service

Covered

A medical travel assistance service is available to the policyholder/insured person when illness or an accident occurs; the insurer's own claims page confirms the travel assistance line is reachable around the clock, and travellers are advised to carry the contact number.

Source

Key conditions

Assistance call deadline

Hospital treatment must be reported to the insurer immediately, and any repatriation must be agreed with the insurer before it is carried out; the round-the-clock travel assistance line should be used for this.

Unauthorized treatment

Breaching the notification/coordination duties (e.g. failing to report a hospital stay or arranging repatriation without prior agreement) can release the insurer wholly or partly from its obligation to pay in line with §28 VVG: intentional breach removes the benefit entirely, grossly negligent breach leads to a proportional reduction.

Purchase while abroad

Cover only begins once the contract has been concluded and the first premium paid, and it never applies retroactively to insured events that occurred before the agreed start date; only persons domiciled in the Federal Republic of Germany may take out the policy.

Chronic conditions

An unexpected acute worsening of a known chronic illness during the trip is covered, provided no treatment (other than routine check-ups) took place in the year before departure and the person was fit to travel at departure; planned or foreseeable treatment of the pre-existing condition remains excluded.

Pregnancy

Routine pregnancy check-ups, elective termination and normal childbirth are excluded, but pregnancy complications, premature births (before the 36th week) or miscarriages, and emergency terminations, count as insured events and are covered.

Pre-existing condition exclusions

Insured events whose occurrence during the trip was already medically foreseeable before departure are excluded, unless there is an unexpected worsening of the existing condition (see chronic diseases) or the trip was undertaken due to the death of a spouse/partner or first-degree relative.

Coverage duration limit

Cover applies for the first 58 days of each temporary trip abroad undertaken within an insurance year; if the stay lasts longer, cover ends after day 58, except where the traveller is unfit to be transported or the return is delayed for reasons beyond their control, in which case cover continues until a safe return is possible; the number of trips per year is unlimited.
