Direct payment

Emergency medical expenses may be reimbursed to the insured or, at the insured's express request and where the local facility accepts it, paid directly by AIG in local currency; assistance costs approved and organised by the 24/7 Assistance Platform (transport, evacuation, hospital transfer, repatriation) are paid directly by AIG, while costs incurred in urgent situations where the platform could not be contacted in advance may be reimbursed on presentation of documentation.

Geographic scope

Policyholder chooses one of: Italy, Europe, Australia and New Zealand, Worldwide excluding North America, or Worldwide including North America

Cover excludes travel in, to or through Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Syria and the Republic of Crimea in all cases

Unique selling points

  • Medical expenses abroad covered up to €20,000,000 on the Platinum tier, far above typical single-trip market minimums.
  • 24/7 Assistance Platform can pay hospitals directly in local currency at the insured's request, avoiding large out-of-pocket upfront payments.
  • Includes legal assistance abroad with bail advance up to €15,000 and legal defence costs up to €3,000 in case of arrest or detention.
  • Four selectable geographic zones (Italy, Europe, Worldwide excluding/including North America) let travellers match the premium to their actual itinerary.
  • Optional Winter Sports, Golf and Business add-on packages let travellers customise cover for specific activities rather than paying for a one-size-fits-all policy.

24/7 assistance helpline

Covered

A dedicated Assistance Platform operates 24 hours a day, every day of the year, to organise and deliver assistance benefits on the insured's request (tel. 0039 023690695, email IT.assistance@aig.com).

Source

Key conditions

Assistance call deadline

The insured (or a family member, travel companion, authority or medical facility on their behalf) must contact the 24/7 Assistance Platform immediately when any Section A assistance benefit is needed, or as soon as objectively possible if immediate contact is impossible, and always before taking any personal initiative; failure to do so may forfeit the right to the assistance benefit under art. 1915 of the Italian Civil Code.

Unauthorized treatment

Costs of assistance services organised directly by the insured, or in any case without the Assistance Platform's prior authorisation, are excluded from cover (save for genuinely urgent situations where prior contact was impossible); if the insured disregards the Platform's medical instructions (e.g. discharges themselves against medical advice or refuses the prescribed transport/repatriation), AIG immediately suspends assistance and reimburses further hospital/surgical costs only up to the cost of the refused transport.

Purchase while abroad

Not permitted: to be valid the policy must be issued to cover the entire duration of a trip departing from Italy and must be issued before the trip begins; it cannot be purchased once the insured is already abroad or the trip has started.

Chronic conditions

Chronic conditions are not addressed as a separate category; a chronic illness that was the subject of medical consultation, care or treatment, or that manifested, in the 12 months preceding policy issuance falls under the 'Malattia o Infortunio Preesistente' (pre-existing condition) exclusion and is not covered.

Pregnancy

Cover excludes a trip undertaken if the expected delivery date falls within the 12 weeks preceding the end of the booked trip (16 weeks for multiple pregnancy), and excludes medical expenses for a pregnancy condition already known before the trip began.

Pre-existing condition exclusions

Defined as any illness, injury or medical condition that — whether or not diagnosed at the time of purchasing the insurance — was the subject of consultation or examination by a qualified doctor and/or of care or treatment, or that manifested or was contracted, in the 12 months preceding the date the policy was issued; such conditions are excluded from all guarantees.

Coverage duration limit

The policy covers a single trip for a maximum of 180 days from the 'Data di effetto della copertura' stated in the insurance certificate; any claim occurring after that term is not covered.
