Direct payment

For third-party liability claims OHRA may settle directly with the injured third party or reach a settlement with them; a policyholder's own admission of liability or promise of compensation to the other party does not bind OHRA. For own-damage claims handled via the OHRA Reparatieservice network, OHRA pays the repairer directly and the policyholder only pays any applicable excess.

Geographic scope

Netherlands

Countries listed on the Internationaal Verzekeringsbewijs (International Motor Insurance Certificate / Green Card); a country crossed out on that certificate is excluded from cover.

Unique selling points

  • Policyholders using the OHRA Repair Service network get a replacement car during repairs, direct settlement with the garage, and (in the AUN2517 wording) a repair warranty, with OHRA also covering storage and valuation costs on a total loss.
  • 24/7 emergency assistance line (OHRA Hulpdienst) reachable both within the Netherlands and abroad for accidents, fire and theft.
  • No-claim discount can build up to 82%, among the highest levels offered in the Dutch motor insurance market.
  • Customers can pay their premium monthly at no extra cost, and get a favourable no-claim discount arrangement for a second car.
  • Zero deductible for windscreen repair and half deductible for windscreen replacement when using OHRA's approved glass-repair network, available 24/7.

Coverage limits

Bodily Injury Liability

Covered

Covers the policyholder's legal liability for injury to third parties caused by the insured car; the maximum indemnity per event is the sum insured stated on the policy schedule, with a higher statutory limit applying if required by the law of a covered country. OHRA additionally pays a guarantee deposit demanded by authorities up to €50,000 per event for all insureds combined, legal costs and statutory interest on top of the sum insured, and reasonable costs of measures taken to prevent or limit damage (bereddingskosten).

Property Damage Liability

Covered

Covers the policyholder's legal liability for damage to third-party property caused by the insured car; the maximum indemnity per event is the sum insured stated on the policy schedule, with a higher statutory limit applying if required by the law of a covered country. Consequential and business-interruption damage is excluded when the policyholder damages another motor vehicle of their own. The €50,000 guarantee-deposit cover and above-sum-insured legal costs/interest described under bodily injury liability apply to the same combined WA sum insured.

Legal Defence / Motor Legal Assistance

unlimited

Optional add-on module providing legal assistance via ARAG. Cover for disputes about traffic-related damage/personal injury and for criminal traffic proceedings is unlimited (the former subject to a minimum claim value of €225); cover for disputes about contracts relating to the car (purchase, repair, insurance, towing) is capped at €12,500 with the same €225 minimum claim value. A €250 deductible applies if the policyholder chooses an external legal counsel instead of an ARAG specialist for a court/administrative procedure without mandatory legal representation. ARAG can advance up to €25,000 bail/property-release deposit for a foreign criminal case, and can pay up to €1,250 if the liable third party is unable to compensate the policyholder within three years.

Green Card / International Motor Insurance Certificate

Covered

The policy provides cover in the countries listed on the Internationaal Verzekeringsbewijs (formerly the Green Card); the insured is not covered in any country crossed out on that certificate. Where the law of a covered country prescribes a higher minimum liability amount than the Dutch sum insured, the higher statutory amount automatically applies.

Roadside/Breakdown Assistance (OHRA Hulpdienst)

Covered

Assistance following an accident, fire, theft or other sudden external event is included in the base policy and available 24/7 in the Netherlands and abroad via the OHRA Hulpdienst (+31 26 400 23 10). Abroad, OHRA covers necessary towing/recovery costs, up to €250 per event for roadside emergency-repair labour, and up to €75 per person per day (max. 10 days) in extra accommodation costs. Assistance for mechanical or electronic breakdowns within the Netherlands requires the optional Pechhulp Nederland module; assistance for such breakdowns abroad requires the All Risk (casco) cover.

Driver Accident Cover (Ongevallen Inzittenden)

Optional

Optional module paying a fixed sum insured (stated on the policy schedule, separately for death and for permanent disability) per insured occupant, including the driver, if the driver suffers medically established bodily injury and dies or becomes permanently disabled as a direct result of a road accident while in, entering or exiting the car, or while performing related roadside activities such as an emergency repair or refuelling.

Passenger Accident Cover (Ongevallen Inzittenden)

Optional

Same optional module as driver accident cover: pays a fixed sum insured per insured passenger (stated on the policy schedule) for death or permanent disability caused directly by a road accident while a passenger in, entering or exiting the car. A separate optional module, Schade Inzittenden, additionally covers material damage/possessions of occupants and pets travelling safely restrained (up to €500 per pet per event), but is a distinct coverage from the accident (injury/death) benefit.

Key conditions

Territorial scope

The policy is valid in the countries shown on the Internationaal Verzekeringsbewijs. A gelijkwaardige vervangende auto used while the insured car is being repaired, serviced or overhauled at a recognised garage is automatically covered under the same modules as the insured's own car.

Green card rules

A country that is crossed out on the Internationaal Verzekeringsbewijs is not covered. Where the law of a covered country sets a higher minimum liability amount than the amount stated on the Dutch policy, the higher statutory amount applies automatically; for the Rechtsbijstand Motorrijtuig module, some dispute categories are only covered within the Netherlands.

Driver restrictions

There is no cover if the driver did not hold a driving licence valid in the Netherlands, was disqualified from driving, or failed to meet special conditions on the licence — unless the licence was invalid only because its validity term had expired and the driver was under 76 years old. Cover is also excluded if the driver was so under the influence of alcohol, drugs or medication that a driving ban was (or would have been) imposed, unless the policyholder was unaware of these circumstances or they arose against the policyholder's will.

Claim notification deadline

Claims must be reported as soon as possible, via Mijn OHRA, the Mobielschademelden.nl app, a completed European Accident Statement sent by post, or by phone; the policy wording does not set a fixed number of days for this initial report. Separately, changes affecting risk or cover (e.g. loss of interest in the car, change of regular driver, address change) must be reported immediately, within 30 days, or within 2 months depending on the type of change.

Bonus-malus rules

The no-claim discount and build-up/reduction of claim-free years applies only to the Wettelijke Aansprakelijkheid and Aanrijding cover. It ranges from 0% (0 claim-free years, no-claim step 6) up to a maximum of 82% (15 or more claim-free years, no-claim step 21), and is recalculated each policy year: a year without a paid claim raises the level by one step; one or more paid claims lower it by one or more steps, with four or more claims in a year always resetting the policyholder to the lowest step (-5 claim-free years, 0% discount).
