Direct payment

For medical expenses abroad, the policyholder must first submit invoices to their Dutch health insurer; De Zeeuwse only reimburses costs that the Dutch health insurer does not cover, after documentation is submitted. For buitengewone kosten (repatriation, evacuation, extra travel/accommodation costs) the De Zeeuwse Alarmcentrale arranges and pays for necessary assistance directly with providers once prior authorization is given. For legal assistance, BrandMR advances court/legal costs and can advance a foreign guarantee deposit (waarborgsom) up to €25,000, to be repaid by the policyholder if refunded by the foreign authority.

Geographic scope

Europe or Worldwide (selectable at policy inception, changeable annually)

Cover under the Europe option includes countries bordering the Mediterranean, Baltic and Black Sea (e.g. Turkey, Israel, Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia); the Worldwide option extends cover globally. Automobilistenhulp (roadside assistance) is valid only in a specified list of European countries and Morocco. Reduced or no cover applies to areas under an orange or red Dutch government travel advisory.

Unique selling points

  • Baggage claims carry no deductible at all ('Er geldt geen eigen risico bij schade aan uw bagage'), unlike many competing policies.
  • Legal assistance within Europe is unlimited in cost when handled by BrandMR's own in-house lawyers, rather than being capped at a fixed sum.
  • A dedicated De Zeeuwse Alarmcentrale is available to arrange and pay for medical evacuation, repatriation and roadside assistance directly with providers.
  • Veterinary costs for a pet falling ill while travelling abroad are reimbursed up to €115, a benefit rarely offered by standard travel policies.
  • If the driver of the insured vehicle falls ill, dies, or is detained abroad, the alarm centre can arrange a replacement driver to bring the car and passengers home.

Coverage limits

Medical expenses abroad

Conditional

Covers medically necessary treatment costs abroad resulting from an accident, illness or pregnancy that arose during the trip and were unforeseeable. Cover applies only supplementary to the policyholder's mandatory Dutch health insurance (only costs not reimbursed by it are covered); no fixed monetary cap is stated. Voluntary excess on the Dutch health policy is not reimbursed.

Source

Emergency medical treatment

Conditional

Emergency treatment (doctor consultation, hospital admission) abroad is covered under the same 'geneeskundige kosten' benefit as general medical expenses. Prior authorization from the De Zeeuwse Alarmcentrale is required; if this is not possible, reimbursement is capped at what would have been paid had the alarm centre been contacted.

Source

Hospitalization abroad

Conditional

Hospital admission abroad is covered under 'geneeskundige kosten' with no separately stated cap, subject to Dutch health insurance coordination and alarm-centre authorization. If treatment (including hospitalization) is expected to last 7 days or more and there is no elevated medical risk from travelling back, De Zeeuwse may require the patient to be repatriated for treatment in the Netherlands.

Source

Outpatient treatment abroad

Conditional

Outpatient/ambulatory medical treatment abroad is covered under the general 'geneeskundige kosten' benefit, supplementary to Dutch health insurance, with no separate cap stated. Routine check-ups, vaccinations, physiotherapy and alternative medicine are excluded.

Source

Emergency dental treatment

€225

Urgent dental treatment abroad that cannot be postponed until return to the Netherlands is covered up to €225. Separately, dental damage to natural teeth, crowns or post-teeth caused directly by an accident is covered up to €450.

Source

Medical transport

Covered

Transport costs by ambulance aircraft or other medically necessary transport, including necessary medical escort, are covered as part of buitengewone kosten with no stated cap, subject to prior authorization by the De Zeeuwse Alarmcentrale medical adviser.

Source

Medical evacuation / repatriation to the Netherlands

Covered

If, in the event of serious injury or illness, medical repatriation to the Netherlands is necessary to save life, avoid or reduce serious health complaints, or avoid/reduce invalidity, the costs of ambulance-aircraft transport and necessary escort are covered with no stated cap, subject to alarm-centre authorization.

Source

Repatriation of remains

Covered

If the insured dies abroad, transport of the body to the Netherlands is covered with no stated cap. Alternatively, if burial or cremation takes place abroad, costs are reimbursed up to the amount that would have been paid for repatriation of the body to the Netherlands.

Source

Search and rescue costs

Covered

Necessary costs of search, rescue or salvage if the insured is missing or has had an accident are covered with no stated cap, provided the search, rescue or salvage is carried out by an official authority.

Source

COVID-19 treatment

No limit stated

The reviewed policy documents do not mention any COVID-19-specific provision, exclusion or cap; general medical-expenses terms would apply as with any illness, but this is not explicitly confirmed in the source.

Source

Pre-existing conditions

Conditional

Costs arising from illness, defects or conditions that already existed or caused complaints on or before the trip's start date are excluded from buitengewone kosten, and are excluded from medical costs unless the policyholder can prove the costs were unexpected or unforeseeable at the time of travel.

Winter sports cover

Optional

Only in Wintersport

Optional add-on that must be listed on the policy schedule. Without it, buitengewone kosten, medical costs, accident benefits and (if selected) extra baggage cover related to winter sports accidents are excluded. With it, accident death/invalidity payouts up to €25,000/€75,000 apply, and cover extends to skiing on domestic or foreign indoor/outdoor ski slopes. Dangerous winter sports (e.g. off-piste without a guide, ski-alpinism, heli-skiing) remain excluded even with this add-on.

Source

Adventure sports cover

Optional

Only in Avontuurlijke Sporten

Optional add-on that must be listed on the policy schedule, covering buitengewone kosten, medical costs, accident benefits, legal assistance and (if selected) baggage for incidents during listed adventure sports (e.g. rock climbing, rafting, kitesurfing, scuba diving up to 40m). Accident payouts are capped lower than the standard amounts (up to €10,000 for death/invalidity). Genuinely dangerous sports (e.g. off-piste skiing, deep/cave/ice diving, combat sports) are never covered even with this add-on.

Source

Pregnancy complications

Conditional

Medical costs arising from pregnancy are covered as part of geneeskundige kosten only if there are complications; normal pregnancy and delivery costs without complications are explicitly excluded.

Source

Personal liability

No limit stated

Personal liability is not part of the Doorlopende Reisverzekering; it is a separate base policy ('Aansprakelijkheid particulier') within the broader Privé Pakket Online, not covered by the travel-medical terms reviewed.

Source

Legal assistance while travelling

unlimited

Legal assistance (recovery of damages, criminal defence, contract disputes) is provided by Brandmeester Advocaten en Juristen B.V. (BrandMR). Within Europe, cover is unlimited when handled by BrandMR's own in-house lawyers and experts and Dutch/European courts have jurisdiction; if external advocates/experts are used, or the matter is outside Europe (excluding non-European Mediterranean countries), the maximum is €5,000. BrandMR can also advance a foreign guarantee deposit (waarborgsom) up to €25,000 per event.

Source

24/7 emergency assistance

Covered

The De Zeeuwse Alarmcentrale (tel. +31 118 226 999) must be contacted in advance for buitengewone kosten, medical treatment/hospitalization abroad, repatriation, and early return on medical grounds; a separate line, De Zeeuwse Alarmcentrale Verkeer (+31 70 314 56 70), handles immediate legal assistance after a traffic accident abroad.

Source

Key conditions

Assistance call deadline

The De Zeeuwse Alarmcentrale (+31 118 226 999) must be contacted and asked for permission in advance of incurring buitengewone kosten or seeking medical treatment/hospitalization; if this is impossible, reimbursement is capped at the amount that would have been paid had the centre been contacted. In case of death by accident, the alarm centre must be informed at least 48 hours before the funeral or cremation.

Unauthorized treatment

There is no fixed monetary penalty stated; however, if the Alarmcentrale is not contacted in advance where required, reimbursement is limited to what would have been paid had prior authorization been obtained, and generally, non-compliance with policy obligations can lead to a reduced or forfeited claim under the General Terms.

Purchase while abroad

The source documents do not explicitly address purchasing or extending this policy while already abroad. Eligibility does require that the insured is registered in the Dutch Basisregistratie Personen (BRP) with the Netherlands as their fixed residence; a change of fixed residence to abroad must be reported and ends the cover for all insureds.

Chronic conditions

Costs from illness, defects or conditions that already existed or caused complaints on or before the trip's start date are excluded from buitengewone kosten, and excluded from medical costs unless the policyholder can prove the costs were unforeseeable when travelling.

Pregnancy

Costs of normal pregnancy and delivery are excluded; costs arising from pregnancy complications are covered under geneeskundige kosten and, if serious, may also justify trip cancellation, curtailment or annulering claims (if that add-on is selected).

Pre-existing condition exclusions

Excluded from buitengewone kosten in all cases; excluded from medical costs unless the policyholder proves the costs were unexpected/unforeseeable at the time of departure.

Coverage duration limit

Trips are covered up to a maximum of 120 consecutive days. Internship/school/study trips abroad are covered only up to 45 consecutive days (no cover at all from day one if this is exceeded). A separate market source indicates the standard 120-day limit can be extended to 180 days on request.
