Direct payment

Claims are settled by reimbursement: for medical costs abroad, invoices must first be submitted to the insured's Dutch health insurer, and only the remaining, non-reimbursed amount is paid out by De Goudse after all required documents (claim form, invoices, medical statement, etc.) have been received; payment follows within a maximum of two weeks after receipt of all necessary information. For extraordinary costs, hospitalisation, repatriation and motorist assistance, the Goudse Alarmcentrale can arrange and pay service providers directly once authorisation has been given.

Geographic scope

Europe or Worldwide, as chosen by the policyholder and stated on the policy schedule

'Europe' includes all of Europe plus Iceland, countries bordering the Mediterranean, Baltic and Black Seas, Madeira, the Canary Islands, the Azores, and the Commonwealth of Independent States up to the Urals. No cover applies for travel in a 'code red' risk area; travel in a 'code orange' area is covered only for damage unrelated to the reason for that code; full cover continues if the insured was already in the area when the code was issued, until they could reasonably have left.

Unique selling points

  • 24/7 emergency assistance via the Goudse Alarmcentrale for medical emergencies, repatriation and breakdowns abroad.
  • No policy deductible applies to claims under the optional Baggage cover.
  • Legal assistance for travel disputes is handled by independent specialist BrandMR, with unlimited cost coverage within Europe when using their in-house lawyers.
  • Combining the travel policy with other covers in the Privé Pakket Online earns a package discount of up to 10% and includes a free accidental death benefit.
  • No policy fees, and no surcharge for paying the premium monthly, quarterly or half-yearly instead of annually.

Necessary medical transport during treatment abroad (e.g. by ambulance aircraft or other medical transport, including required medical escort) is covered when medically necessary, subject to prior approval by the Goudse Alarmcentrale's medical adviser; no fixed maximum amount is stated.

Source

Medical evacuation / repatriation

Conditional

If it is medically necessary for the insured to be transported back to the Netherlands (to save life, prevent/reduce serious health complaints, or prevent/reduce disability), the cost of an air ambulance or other suitable medical transport, plus necessary escort, is covered following approval by the Goudse Alarmcentrale; no fixed maximum amount is stated.

Source

Repatriation of remains

Covered

If the insured dies abroad, the cost of transporting the body to the Netherlands is covered. If burial or cremation takes place abroad instead, the costs are reimbursed up to the amount that would have been paid for repatriation of the body.

Source

Search and rescue costs

Covered

Necessary costs of search, rescue or salvage if the insured is missing or has had an accident are covered, provided the search/rescue/salvage is carried out by an official body; no fixed maximum amount is stated.

Source

COVID-19 treatment

No limit stated

The reviewed policy documents do not mention COVID-19 treatment as a separate, named benefit; illness generally, including infectious disease, falls under the general medical expenses benefit.

Source

Pre-existing medical conditions

Excluded

Costs arising from an illness, condition or disorder that already existed, or was causing symptoms, on or before the start date of the trip are excluded, as are costs where the insured was already receiving medical treatment before departure that had to be continued during the trip, unless the insured can prove the costs were genuinely unforeseeable.

Winter sports cover

Optional

Only in Wintersport (optional rider)

Optional add-on that must be shown on the policy schedule. Without it, extraordinary costs, medical costs and accident benefits are excluded for events directly resulting from winter sports. With the rider added, the same base benefits apply during winter sports, and (if Baggage is also insured) extra baggage benefits apply: damaged/lost/stolen sports equipment up to €1.250,-, rental of replacement equipment up to €175,- per day, and reimbursement of unused prepaid lessons/ski passes/equipment rental up to €2.000,- per person per event. Dangerous winter sports (e.g. off-piste skiing without a guide, heli-skiing, ski jumping, bobsleighing) remain excluded even with this rider.

Adventure sports cover

Optional

Only in Avontuurlijke sporten (optional rider)

Optional add-on that must be shown on the policy schedule. When added, it extends the base benefits (extraordinary costs, medical costs, accidents, legal assistance and, if insured, baggage) to accidents occurring during a listed adventure sport (e.g. abseiling, rock climbing, diving up to 40m, rafting), including cover for scuba diving in the Netherlands and decompression-chamber treatment if needed. Sports classified as 'dangerous sports' (e.g. bungee jumping, motorsport racing, glacier mountaineering without a guide) are never covered, even with this rider.

Pregnancy complications

Conditional

Medical costs resulting from complications of pregnancy are covered as part of the medical expenses benefit. Uncomplicated pregnancy and childbirth are explicitly excluded. Unexpected pregnancy complications making the trip medically inadvisable are also a valid ground for trip cancellation or early return under the optional Cancellation cover.

Personal liability while travelling

Excluded

General personal liability towards third parties is not part of the Doorlopende Reisverzekering; the base cover comprises only extraordinary costs, medical costs, accidents, legal assistance and motorist assistance. Liability cover is offered as a separate product (Aansprakelijkheidsverzekering) within the Privé Pakket Online.

Legal assistance

€5,000

Legal assistance for disputes directly related to the trip (claiming damages from a third party, criminal defence, contract disputes) is handled by Brandmeester Advocaten en Juristen B.V. (BrandMR). Within Europe, costs are reimbursed without limit when BrandMR's own in-house lawyers/experts handle the case; if an external lawyer or expert is used (within or outside Europe) the maximum reimbursement is €5.000,-. Recoverable costs of a criminal defence after acquittal, and bail/guarantee sums advanced by BrandMR, are also each capped at €5.000,- per event.

24/7 emergency assistance

Covered

The Goudse Alarmcentrale (+31 182 544 555) provides round-the-clock assistance for repatriation, hospitalisation, accidents, extraordinary expenses and motorist breakdown assistance abroad; a separate line (+31 70 3145 670) handles legal assistance after a traffic accident abroad.

Key conditions

Assistance call deadline

For hospital admission, doctor consultations, repatriation and early return on medical grounds, the Goudse Alarmcentrale (+31 182 544 555) must be contacted and give permission in advance. In a life-threatening situation, go straight to the nearest emergency department first, then call the Alarmcentrale within 48 hours of admission. In case of death, the Alarmcentrale must be informed immediately and at least 48 hours before the funeral or cremation.

Unauthorized treatment

If the Alarmcentrale could not be contacted in advance for medical costs, reimbursement is capped at the amount that would have been paid had authorisation been obtained in advance. For extraordinary costs, no reimbursement is made for an accident not covered, or if permission for repatriation was not given. Late notification of a death can lead to a reduced payout or forfeiture of the claim if it harms the insurer's reasonable interests.

Purchase while abroad

The policy documents do not specifically address taking out this insurance while already abroad. Cover requires the policyholder to be registered as living in the Netherlands (Basisregistratie Personen); moving your permanent residence abroad ends the cover.

Chronic conditions

Costs are excluded if the insured was already under medical treatment when departing and that treatment had to be continued during the trip, unless it can be shown the need for care was genuinely unforeseeable.

Pregnancy

Costs of an uncomplicated pregnancy or childbirth are excluded; costs resulting from pregnancy complications are covered as medical expenses, and unexpected complications are also a valid reason to cancel or curtail the trip under the optional Cancellation cover.

Pre-existing condition exclusions

Costs arising from an illness, disorder or condition that already existed, or was already causing symptoms, on or before the start date of the trip are excluded, unless the insured can prove the costs were genuinely unforeseeable at the time of booking.

Coverage duration limit

Cover applies to trips of a maximum of 120 consecutive days. A shorter maximum applies to trips abroad for an internship, school placement or study (the exact number of days is specified in the policy documents); no cover applies from day one for a study/internship trip that exceeds that limit.
