HEMA Financial Services B.V. (trading as HEMA Verzekeringen / verzekerdbijHEMA.nl)
HEMA
HEMA is a travel insurance for the Netherlands market with online purchase and 24/7 assistance.
Direct payment
Costs are generally reimbursed after the trip based on original invoices and proof of report, but for assistance, rescue and repatriation the 24/7 alarm centre organises and settles help directly; you must call and get authorisation from the alarm centre before accepting help or incurring costs.
Geographic scope
Europe (including several non-European Mediterranean-adjacent countries) or Worldwide, as chosen on the policy
Valid in the countries stated on the policy. The Europe option also covers listed non-European countries (e.g. Morocco, Madeira, Tunisia, Israel, Egypt, Canary Islands, Azores). Also valid in the Netherlands if at least one paid overnight stay is booked with a recognised travel/holiday company, directly before or after a trip abroad; the medical costs module only applies when travelling abroad.
Unique selling points
- Winter sports and underwater sports assistance and rescue costs are included as standard in the base package, with no separate module needed for the assistance element.
- Doctor's costs under the optional medical costs module are reimbursed at full cost price with no fixed monetary ceiling, only limited by time (up to 365 days) and by being supplementary to your Dutch health insurance.
- Children are automatically co-insured with no age limit, as long as they live at your address or are studying elsewhere in the Netherlands.
- A 24/7 alarm centre is reachable every day of the year, both from the Netherlands and from abroad, to organise assistance in emergencies.
- The continuous policy can be cancelled by the policyholder online at any time, with any overpaid premium refunded.
Coverage limits
Medical expenses
unlimited
Optional module reimbursing doctor's help (first aid, doctor's fees, hospital treatment, prescribed treatment, medicines, transport to treatment) at full cost price for a period ending on return to the Netherlands, capped at 365 days from the first day of treatment. Only paid if higher than, or not covered by, your Dutch health insurance, and only when the need arises abroad while already travelling.
Emergency medical treatment
unlimited
Costs of first aid and emergency doctor's help abroad are reimbursed at full cost price under the optional medical costs module, supplementary to your Dutch health insurance.
Hospitalization
unlimited
Costs of nursing and treatment in a general hospital are reimbursed at full cost price under the optional medical costs module; treatment in an eye clinic or private clinic is excluded. You must call the alarm centre before a hospital admission.
Outpatient treatment
unlimited
Costs of doctor-prescribed treatments, examinations, medicines and bandages are reimbursed at full cost price under the optional medical costs module.
Emergency dental treatment
€300
Under the optional medical costs module, dental treatment costs (dentist's fee, prescribed X-rays and medicines, dentures/crowns/bridges) are reimbursed up to €300 per insured, only if the dental problem arises unexpectedly after departure and treatment cannot wait until returning home.
Medical transport
unlimited
Included in the base package (hulp en redding): if a doctor decides you must be transported, costs of transport within the Netherlands, or to the Netherlands if you were abroad, are reimbursed at full cost price.
Medical (air ambulance) evacuation
unlimited
Included in the base package: transport by air ambulance to the Netherlands is reimbursed at full cost price, but only if necessary to save your life or if a doctor expects it will prevent or reduce permanent invalidity.
Repatriation of remains
unlimited
Included in the base package: if you die abroad, costs are reimbursed at full cost price either to bring your body to the Netherlands, or (if buried/cremated abroad) for close family and household members to attend, capped at what repatriation would have cost. A €2,500 death benefit is also paid to next of kin.
Search and rescue
unlimited
Included in the base package: if you go missing, costs made by organisations cooperating with the authorities (police, fire brigade, ambulance, rescue services) to find and rescue you, or to search for and recover your body, are reimbursed at full cost price.
Pre-existing conditions
Excluded
Costs are not reimbursed if, when you left on the trip, you could already have expected needing medical treatment, or if you were treated abroad for the same problem before the trip and need treatment for it again.
Winter sports cover
Covered
Included as standard in the base package: assistance for winter sports (e.g. skiing) and underwater sports is reimbursed at full cost price, plus a €2,500 death benefit and €1,250 equipment cover. Medical costs arising from winter/underwater sports are only reimbursed if the optional medical costs module is also taken out. Certain dangerous winter sports (ski jumping, bobsleigh, heli-skiing, etc.) are never covered.
Adventure/dangerous sports cover
Excluded
Damage caused while practising a dangerous sport for yourself (e.g. combat sports, abseiling, bungee jumping, hang-gliding, paragliding, parasailing, white-water rafting, horse/cycle/offshore sailing races, rugby) is excluded, unless it happens during a guided tourist activity supervised by paid professionals.
Pregnancy complications
Conditional
Costs related to pregnancy are excluded, except if you are less than 7 months pregnant and could not have known beforehand that treatment would become necessary; in that case costs are reimbursed under the relevant module (e.g. medical costs, if that module was taken out).

24/7 assistance line
Covered
Included in the base package: an alarm centre is reachable 7 days a week, 24 hours a day, from the Netherlands (071-364 1832) and abroad (0031-71-364 1832), to organise help, mediate with local providers, and advise on next steps after an accident or damage.
Key conditions
Assistance call deadline
You must always call HEMA's 24/7 alarm centre and obtain their permission before accepting help or incurring costs (e.g. for medical assistance, vehicle assistance, or replacement transport), and before any hospital admission during your trip.
Unauthorized treatment
The terms do not state a fixed financial penalty, but costs for assistance, vehicle help, replacement transport or hospitalisation that are incurred without first calling and obtaining permission from the alarm centre are not covered.
Purchase while abroad
The policy terms do not address purchasing or activating this insurance while already abroad; they only describe applying for the policy online via the HEMA website before travel.
Chronic conditions
Medical and other costs are not covered if, when you left on the trip, you could already have expected that you would need medical treatment during the trip because of an existing illness, condition or ailment.
Pregnancy
Costs related to pregnancy are excluded, except if you are less than 7 months pregnant and could not have foreseen beforehand that treatment would be needed.
Pre-existing condition exclusions
Costs are not covered if you could have expected needing medical treatment when you left on the trip, or if you were already being treated abroad before the trip for the same problem and need treatment for it again during the trip.
Coverage duration limit
You are covered for a maximum of 60 consecutive days per trip; this is only extended if you cannot return home due to an unavoidable, unwanted event, and only for costs made abroad until you can reasonably return. Doctor's cost reimbursement under the medical module is additionally limited to 365 days after the first day of treatment.
