Direct payment

ZEKUR does not describe a general cashless/direct-payment network; the 24/7 Alarmcentrale arranges and coordinates direct assistance (e.g. with hospitals) on behalf of the insurer in cases of hospitalisation, serious accident or death, including requesting medical information directly from treating doctors where needed.

Geographic scope

Worldwide, with special conditions for trips within the Netherlands (minimum 1 overnight stay required)

Cover applies worldwide; the policyholder must live in and be registered in the Netherlands to take out or keep the policy.

Unique selling points

  • Worldwide continuous cover for trips of up to 180 consecutive days, so you never need to buy a new policy for every holiday.
  • Winter sports and underwater sports are included as standard at no extra premium.
  • A 24/7 ZEKUR Alarmcentrale coordinates emergency medical help, repatriation and search-and-rescue support.
  • The Super ZEKUR Wonen bundle includes the highest baggage cover tier of €3,500 per person per trip automatically, with no separate add-on needed.
  • The whole home-insurance bundle, including travel cover, can be quoted and purchased fully online.

Coverage limits

Medical expenses

Conditional

Medical costs are only covered as an excess (excedent) on top of a Dutch health insurance (zorgverzekering); without such cover there is no protection under this section. Abroad, doctor and hospital costs are reimbursed at actual cost (kostende prijs); in the Netherlands doctor/hospital costs are reimbursed up to €1,000 per event. Cover runs for a maximum of 365 days from the start of treatment.

Source

Emergency medical treatment

Conditional

Costs of doctors and emergency hospital treatment abroad are reimbursed at actual cost as an excess above your Dutch health insurance; there is no cover if you have no Dutch zorgverzekering.

Source

Hospitalization

€1,000

Hospitalization costs abroad are reimbursed at actual cost as an excess over your Dutch zorgverzekering; hospitalization/doctor costs incurred in the Netherlands (e.g. on the way to/from the destination) are reimbursed up to a combined €1,000 per event. Maximum 365 days from first treatment.

Source

Outpatient treatment

€1,000

Doctor consultations and outpatient care abroad are reimbursed at actual cost as an excess above your Dutch zorgverzekering; care received in the Netherlands is reimbursed up to a combined €1,000 per event with hospitalization costs.

Source

Emergency dental treatment

€500

Dental costs abroad due to an accident are reimbursed up to €500 (including follow-up treatment in the Netherlands); dental costs for other acute/emergency dental care abroad are also reimbursed up to €500.

Source

Medical transport

Covered

Transport costs (ambulance, taxi or public transport) to and from the nearest doctor or hospital after illness or an accident are reimbursed at actual cost.

Source

Medical evacuation (air ambulance)

Covered

If a passenger flight, ambulance car or taxi cannot be used due to illness or injury, repatriation to the Netherlands by air ambulance, including medically necessary transport between hospital and airport, is reimbursed at actual cost.

Source

Repatriation of remains

Covered

If a verzekerde dies as a result of an insured illness or accident, transport of the remains to the last or registered residence in the Netherlands, the coffin and required documents are reimbursed at actual cost; if remains are not brought back, local burial/cremation costs and travel of two family members are reimbursed up to what repatriation would have cost.

Source

Search and rescue operations

Covered

Costs of search or rescue operations required by local authorities (including where an accident is only suspected) are reimbursed at actual cost.

Source

24/7 assistance

Covered

The ZEKUR Alarmcentrale (+31 (0)20-592 91 52) is reachable 24 hours a day for arranging transport, medical guidance during the return trip, advice, sending medication and other necessary assistance.

Key conditions

Assistance call deadline

In case of death or hospitalisation lasting more than 24 hours, you must notify the ZEKUR Alarmcentrale within 24 hours; all other claims must be reported within 1 month of returning to the Netherlands. Prior permission from the Alarmcentrale is required before certain costs (vehicle breakdown/hire, early return, replacement accommodation, hospitalisation, death, or transport by ambulance/air ambulance) will be reimbursed.

Unauthorized treatment

No fixed monetary penalty is stated, but if you fail to meet your obligations after a loss (for example not asking prior approval for certain costs, or not doing everything reasonable to limit the damage) and this harms ZEKUR's interests, you lose the right to compensation for the resulting costs.

Purchase while abroad

The travel insurance can only be taken out as part of a ZEKUR Wonen home-insurance bundle by policyholders who live in and are registered in the Netherlands; there is no cover for treatment that was already ongoing before the cover period began.

Chronic conditions

Costs of a chronic condition for which you were already receiving treatment when the cover started are not reimbursed; only unforeseen medical events during the trip are covered.

Pregnancy

Normal pregnancy-related costs and elective abortion are excluded, but medical complications resulting from pregnancy are covered under the medical expenses section.

Pre-existing condition exclusions

If the cover period started while you were already under medical treatment, the costs of that continuing or prescribed treatment are not reimbursed.

Coverage duration limit

Cover applies per trip for a maximum of 180 consecutive days; claims for medical costs must relate to treatment starting within the cover period and are limited to 365 days from the start of the first treatment.
