Overview
UNIQA is a universal insurer active on the Slovak market since 1990 (originally as Poisťovňa OTČINA, renamed UNIQA in 2001). Following the 2020-2021 acquisition and merger with AXA's Czech and Slovak entities, it now operates in Slovakia as a branch of the Czech company UNIQA pojišťovna, a.s., offering a wide range of life and non-life insurance, as well as pension products through affiliated UNIQA companies (d.s.s. and d.d.s.).

Regulatory updates
UNIQA has been subject to several NBS enforcement actions in recent years. In 2021 NBS fined the insurer €25,000 for unlawfully terminating consumer accident policies. In July 2023 the NBS Banking Board confirmed a record €200,000 fine against UNIQA — the highest ever imposed on a Slovak insurer — for unfair commercial practices and an unacceptable contractual condition after it delayed paying a claim to a client with leukemia; UNIQA paid the fine and chose not to challenge it in court. Separately, UNIQA's pension arm (UNIQA DSS) was fined €25,000 in 2023 for sending savers false and misleading pension forecasts. Since 21 May 2021 the insurer has operated in Slovakia as a registered branch (UNIQA pojišťovna, a.s., pobočka poisťovne z iného členského štátu) under the merged Czech entity, following the completion of the AXA integration.
