Direct payment

The 24/7 assistance company (GLOBAL ASSISTANCE SLOVAKIA) arranges admission to medical facilities and, on written request in cases of financial hardship, can secure direct payment of treatment costs; outpatient treatment costs must generally be paid on the spot by the insured and are reimbursed against original documents after returning from the trip.

Geographic scope

Worldwide, except the Slovak Republic

Coverage applies to all countries of the world except the Slovak Republic and, unless otherwise agreed, except a state in which the insured participates in the public health insurance system. If the insured is a foreign citizen legally residing in Slovakia, cover applies to the territory agreed in the policy, excluding their home state or the state where they hold public health insurance.

Unique selling points

  • Package-based cover with a selection of the most common risks that protects travelers from the moment they leave their front door.
  • Medical expenses are reimbursed even in the event of an epidemic or pandemic, up to 100,000 EUR, unlike many standard policies that exclude this entirely.
  • Worldwide territorial validity of the policy, not limited to Europe.
  • The policy can be concluded for an indefinite term with a single trip lasting up to 90 days under the top package tier, removing the need to arrange new cover before every trip.
  • Extended assistance services include a second medical opinion from a foreign specialist, translated into Slovak at no extra charge.

Key conditions

Assistance call deadline

The insured must without undue delay call the 24/7 assistance service GLOBAL ASSISTANCE SLOVAKIA (+421 2 68 20 20 60) to report the event; written notification to the insurer via the official claim form is additionally required within 30 calendar days — Art. 8(2)(c) counts this from the occurrence of the loss, while Art. 28(2) (medical expenses) counts it from the insured's return from the trip.

Unauthorized treatment

Costs of transport or repatriation arranged without the prior approval of the insurer or assistance company are not covered (Art. 27(1)(f) VPP CCZ-1); if the insured refuses a requested medical examination, no benefit is provided (Art. 28(1)(b)); more generally, deliberate breach of policy duties that materially affected a claim allows the insurer to reduce the benefit proportionally (Art. 8(4)).

Purchase while abroad

On the insurer's request, the insured must prove that at the time the insurance contract was concluded they were located on the territory of the Slovak Republic (Art. 8(1)(e) VPP CCZ-1).

Chronic conditions

Treatment or medication for chronic diseases, and for illnesses known or already being treated before departure abroad, is excluded from cover (Art. 27(1)(d)-(e) VPP CCZ-1).

Pregnancy

Treatment (including delivery) for pregnancy complications arising before the 24th week of pregnancy is covered; complications from a high-risk pregnancy, abortion or normal childbirth outside this exception are excluded (Art. 14(1)(f), Art. 27(2)(c) VPP CCZ-1).

Pre-existing condition exclusions

Costs are excluded where deterioration of health was foreseeable at the time the contract was concluded or at the time of travel, except for necessary emergency treatment to avert an immediate threat to life (Art. 27(1)(b) VPP CCZ-1).

Coverage duration limit

A single continuous stay abroad may last a maximum of 45 calendar days under the Balík Liečebné náklady and Balík Komplet 45 packages, or up to 90 calendar days under Balík Komplet 90 (Art. 5(3) VPP CCZ-1); additionally, a person who reaches age 70 before the policy's inception may only take out this insurance for a term of up to 90 days (IPID).
