Direct payment
ARAG/AXA Assistance coordinates and pays medical service providers directly when the insured contacts the 24/7 emergency line before receiving treatment. Reimbursement applies when direct intervention was not possible or in cases of force majeure. The insurer must be notified before incurring medical expenses except in emergencies.

Medical, surgical, pharmaceutical and hospitalisation expenses
Covered
Covers medical, surgical, pharmaceutical and hospitalisation expenses due to accident or illness occurring during travel. Spain: 900 EUR; Europe: 1,000,000 EUR; World: 1,000,000 EUR (ARAG version) or unlimited/cost price (AXA/Inter Partner Assistance version). Optional supplement available for Europe/World up to 4,800,000 EUR. Valid more than 25 km from habitual residence (10 km in Balearic and Canary Islands). In case of vital emergency from unforeseeable complication of chronic/pre-existing illness: only first 24 hours, max 5% of insured medical sum (ARAG version) or max 1% up to 50,000 EUR (AXA version).
Emergency medical treatment
Covered
Emergency medical treatment by emergency medical teams, complementary medical exams, hospitalisations, treatments and surgical interventions, and supply of medications. The insurer's medical team must authorise treatment except in emergencies or force majeure. Insured sum is the same as the overall medical expenses limit: Europe 1,000,000 EUR; World 1,000,000 EUR (ARAG) or unlimited (AXA). In case of vital emergency from complication of chronic/pre-existing illness: max 5% of medical sum for first 24h only.
Hospitalisation expenses
Covered
Hospitalisation expenses are included within the overall medical expenses guarantee. Europe: 1,000,000 EUR; World: 1,000,000 EUR (ARAG) or unlimited cost price (AXA version). If treatment is expected to exceed 14 days, the insurer may transfer the insured to their home country to receive treatment. Hospitalisation is defined as registration as a patient for a minimum of 24 hours or an overnight stay with a main meal.
Outpatient medical treatment
Covered
Outpatient treatment expenses (medical consultations, complementary exams, and medications prescribed by a doctor for non-hospitalisation conditions) are covered within the global medical expenses limit. Repeated medications or pharmaceutical expenses arising from chronic conditions are excluded. Europe: up to 1,000,000 EUR (ARAG) or unlimited (AXA); World: same limits.
Emergency dental expenses abroad
Covered
Covers emergency dental treatment due to acute dental problems such as infections or trauma requiring urgent treatment. Maximum 500 EUR (Europe and World). Implants, prostheses, bridges, and endodontics are excluded. Not applicable in Spain.
Medical transport and repatriation of sick/injured
Covered
Covers ambulance transfer to the nearest clinic or hospital, supervision by the insurer's medical team, and transport of the injured/sick person by the most appropriate means to the prescribed hospital or home. In Europe and Mediterranean rim countries a specially equipped medical aircraft may be used at the insurer's medical team's discretion. In other locations, regular scheduled flights are used. If hospitalised far from home, subsequent transfer to habitual residence is also covered at the time of medical discharge.
Medical evacuation
Covered
Medical evacuation is included within the medical transport guarantee. The insurer's medical team determines the appropriate transport method based on urgency and severity of the case. Medical air ambulance available in Europe and Mediterranean rim countries. Regular scheduled flights used for other destinations worldwide. Full cost covered.
Repatriation of mortal remains
Covered
In the event of the insured's death during travel, the insurer covers all formalities and expenses for transfer or repatriation of mortal remains to the place of burial, cremation, or funeral ceremony in the insured's country of origin. Burial, cremation, and funeral ceremony expenses and the cost of the coffin are NOT covered.
Search and rescue
Excluded
Search and rescue of persons at sea, in mountains, or in deserts is explicitly excluded from the IATI Estrella general conditions. It is available in IATI Mochilero (up to 15,000 EUR) but not in the Estrella product.
COVID-19 treatment coverage
Covered
COVID-19 is treated as any other illness under the medical expenses guarantee. The IATI Estrella CCGG includes a 'Pack COVID' that: extends hotel convalescence from 10 to 14 days for COVID quarantine, includes PCR testing for insured if a fellow traveller on the same policy tests positive, and treats COVID-19 as a serious illness for the trip cancellation guarantee. Coverage limits are the same as overall medical expenses (Europe 1,000,000 EUR, World 1,000,000 EUR/unlimited depending on underwriter).
Pre-existing conditions coverage
Conditional
Chronic, pre-existing, and congenital conditions are generally excluded. Exception: in case of vital emergency resulting from an unforeseeable complication of a chronic, congenital, or pre-existing illness, or an unforeseeable complication of pregnancy in the first 24 weeks of gestation, the insurer covers ONLY the expenses of a first emergency medical assistance within the first 24 hours of hospital admission. This emergency coverage is capped at 5% of the medical expenses insured sum (ARAG version) or 1% up to a maximum of 50,000 EUR (AXA version). For acute processes with pre-existing comorbidity, the maximum is also capped at 5% of the insured sum. A pre-existing/chronic illness is defined as any pathology whose symptoms began before the policy was taken out, even if a definitive diagnosis has not yet been reached. Illnesses with decompensation within 30 days prior to policy contracting are excluded from cancellation.
Winter sports coverage
Optional
Skiing and other winter sports are excluded from the IATI Estrella base policy. They are available as an optional add-on ('suplemento deportes de aventura') which, when contracted, extends coverage to: skiing, cross-country skiing, ski touring, ice skating, snowshoes and snowboarding (excluding heliski and off-piste skiing). The add-on also covers other adventure sports such as white water rafting, canyoning, bouldering up to 8 metres, sport climbing, fencing, speleology up to 150m depth, water skiing, kitesurf, hydrospeed, mountain biking, trekking up to 5,000m altitude, among others.
Adventure and sports coverage
Covered
A wide range of sports and activities are included in the base policy at no extra cost, provided they are not the main purpose of the trip and are not performed professionally or competitively: athletics, gym activities, basketball, cycling, kayak, swimming, sailing, paddle surf, padel, paintball, hiking (trekking below 3,000m), horse riding, snorkelling, diving up to 20m depth, golf, segway, 4x4 routes, and many others. An optional adventure sports supplement adds: whitewater rafting, canyoning, bouldering up to 8m, sport climbing, fencing, speleology up to 150m, water skiing, flysurf, hydrospeed, kitesurf, mountain biking, quad bikes, bungee jumping, survival, trekking up to 5,000m altitude, and winter sports (excluding heliski and off-piste).
Pregnancy complications coverage
Conditional
Coverage for unforeseeable complications of pregnancy is limited to the first 24 weeks of gestation. In case of vital emergency from an unforeseeable complication of pregnancy, coverage is limited to the first emergency medical assistance within the first 24 hours of hospital admission, capped at 5% of the medical expenses insured sum. Childbirth and pregnancy-related expenses are generally excluded. Complications of pregnancy for trip cancellation are covered for complications not related to pre-existing conditions occurring after policy contracting, except for complications from the 7th month (28 weeks) onwards. Risky pregnancies are excluded from cancellation.
Private civil liability
Covered
Covers pecuniary indemnifications that the insured may be legally obliged to pay as a private person for bodily or material damages involuntarily caused to third parties during travel. Limit: 60,000 EUR (Spain, Europe, World). Includes judicial costs and court bonds. Excludes: liability from motor vehicles, aircraft and vessels; professional, union, political or associative activities; fines and sanctions; damages to entrusted objects; liability from certain sports (alpinism, boxing, parachuting, etc.).
Legal assistance and defence abroad
Covered
Legal assistance services include: 24/7 telephone legal advisory service; connection with a lawyer network for in-person legal assistance abroad; criminal legal defence for negligent acts during travel in European courts (3,000 EUR including bonds); non-contractual damages claims (3,000 EUR); breach of purchase contracts (3,000 EUR); breach of service contracts (3,000 EUR). Minimum claim amount for judicial proceedings: 300 EUR. Legal claims service hours: Mon-Fri 09:00-19:00 local time (calls received 24/7, replied next business day).
24/7 traveller assistance service
Covered
The insurer provides a 24-hour/7-day telephone traveller orientation service ('Orientación Telefónica al Viajero'). The insured can access the insurer's team of local experts for travel-related queries including: insurance advisory, vaccination information, advice on flight/connection delays, cancellations, denied boarding, political/social situations at destination, medical outbreak information, supplier strikes. Key conditions
Assistance call deadline
The insured must contact the ARAG/AXA Assistance emergency telephone line as an essential condition before any covered service is rendered. Failure to notify may result in denial of coverage or reduced reimbursement. Services not requested from or authorized by the insurer are not covered, except in cases of force majeure or duly justified material impossibility. Unauthorized treatment
Medical or transport services that the insured decides to obtain unilaterally, without authorization or knowledge of the insurer, will not be covered by the policy, except in cases of duly accredited emergency or force majeure. The insurer reserves the right to request reasonable documents or evidence to process payment of any requested benefit.
Purchase while abroad
The policy must be contracted before the trip departure date. If contracted on the same date as the trip start (but before departure), coverage takes effect 4 hours after effective arrival at the destination airport, and delay/transport-related guarantees do not apply for the outbound journey. If contracted after the trip has started, coverage takes effect 72 hours after policy issuance. Trip cancellation guarantee is never active when the policy is contracted after the trip has started.
Chronic conditions
Chronic, pre-existing, or congenital diseases and their consequences are generally excluded. Exception: in case of vital emergency from an unforeseeable complication, coverage applies ONLY for the first emergency medical assistance within the first 24 hours of hospital admission, capped at 5% of the insured medical sum (ARAG) or 1% up to 50,000 EUR (AXA). Premature birth of the insured is covered for trip cancellation. Complications from the 7th month (28 weeks) onwards and risky pregnancies are excluded from cancellation.

Illnesses suffering decompensation/exacerbation within 30 days prior to policy contracting are excluded from trip cancellation.

Coverage is linked to the duration of the trip as specified in the policy particulars. Maximum trip duration for IATI Estrella: 365 consecutive days per trip or displacement. For insured persons residing abroad travelling to a country other than Spain: maximum 120 consecutive days. For insured persons residing abroad travelling to Spain: maximum 365 consecutive days. Coverage ends immediately when the insured returns to their habitual residence or is admitted to a health centre located within 25 km of their home (15 km in Balearic and Canary Islands).
