Coverage limits
Medical expenses
Covered
Covers doctor fees, prescribed medications (during first medical assistance), hospitalisation costs, and ambulance ordered by a physician for a local journey. Limits vary by tier and geographic zone: Classic — Spain €600, Europe €75,000, Rest of World €75,000; Plus — Spain €50,000, Europe €500,000, World €1,500,000; Premium — Europe €1,000,000, World €6,000,000. In case of a vital emergency arising from an unforeseeable complication of a pre-existing or congenital condition, only the costs of initial emergency care within the first 24 hours from admission are covered.
Emergency medical treatment
Covered
Emergency medical treatment is included within the medical expenses guarantee. IMA IBÉRICA's medical team coordinates care and determines whether treatment occurs at the location of the incident or repatriation to the insured's habitual residence. The insurer must be contacted immediately at +34 91 390 73 18; treatments not previously authorised are excluded except in cases of force majeure. Covered limits are the same as under medical expenses by tier and zone.
Hospitalisation
Covered
Hospitalisation costs are covered as part of the medical expenses guarantee, subject to the same per-tier geographic limits (Classic: up to €75,000 outside Spain; Plus: up to €1,500,000 outside Europe; Premium: up to €6,000,000 outside Europe). If hospitalisation exceeds five days and no family member is present, IMA IBÉRICA provides a return flight (economy) or train (first class) for a family member and covers accommodation up to €80/day for up to 10 days.
Outpatient treatment
Covered
Outpatient medical fees (doctor consultations, prescribed medications during first assistance, and physician-ordered local ambulance) are covered within the medical expenses guarantee. No separate sub-limit is stated for outpatient vs. inpatient; all fall under the same aggregate medical expenses limit per tier and geographic zone. Physiotherapy, rehabilitation, and aesthetic or elective procedures are explicitly excluded.
Emergency dental expenses abroad
Covered
Covers urgent dental expenses abroad up to €60 (Classic tier). Endodontics, aesthetic reconstructions of prior treatments, prosthetics, crowns and implants are explicitly excluded. This is a sub-guarantee of the medical expenses coverage applicable only abroad. Plus and Premium tier limits not confirmed in available sources; Classic limit is €60.
Medical transport (sanitary transfer)
Covered
IMA IBÉRICA covers ambulance transfer to the nearest clinic or hospital, coordination of medical transport by IMA's medical team, and transfer of the sick or injured insured to the prescribed hospital or habitual residence when return by the originally contracted means is not possible. The means of transport is determined by IMA IBÉRICA's medical team based on severity; a medical aircraft may be used if the insured is in Europe or Mediterranean-rim countries. Stated as "Incluido" (no monetary cap) in the Classic guarantee table.
Medical evacuation
Covered
Included within the sanitary transfer guarantee ("Traslado sanitario de enfermos y heridos"). IMA IBÉRICA's medical team determines whether evacuation is required and organises and bears the full cost of repatriation or transfer to the insured's habitual residence. No monetary cap is stated ("Incluido"). A medical aircraft may be used for insureds located in Europe or Mediterranean-rim countries.
Repatriation or transport of mortal remains
Covered
In the event of the insured's death during a trip, IMA IBÉRICA organises and fully covers the transport of the mortal remains to the place of burial in Spain, including post-mortem conditioning costs in accordance with legal requirements. Funeral parlour and burial expenses are not covered. Stated as "Ilimitado" in the Classic guarantee table.
Search and rescue expenses
Covered
If the insured is exposed to a risk that generates search and rescue expenses by civilian or military rescue services or relief organisations, IMA IBÉRICA reimburses these costs up to the limit stated in the policy certificate and particular conditions. The Classic tier limit is €2,000. Note: mountain, sea or desert rescue is explicitly excluded under the general medical exclusions (section 16.2.1). This coverage applies to other rescue scenarios.
COVID-19 medical treatment
Covered
All Imaway travel insurance modalities include coverage for medical expenses and hospitalisation resulting from COVID-19 at the destination, including costs of a positive PCR test prescribed by a doctor. Extended stay due to medical quarantine and family accommodation costs are also covered. The specific monetary limits for COVID-19 treatment are the same as the general medical expenses limits per tier and geographic zone.
Pre-existing and chronic conditions
Conditional
Pre-existing and chronic diseases and their consequences are generally excluded. However, in the case of a vital emergency arising from an unforeseeable complication of a pre-existing or congenital condition, only the first emergency medical care within the first 24 hours from admission to the medical centre is covered. Chronic diseases are excluded for all travellers regardless of age. No medical certificate is required at the time of purchase. Coverage is limited to urgent medical situations that arise unexpectedly during the trip.
Winter sports cover
Excluded
Accidents arising from the practice of skiing and related snow sports are explicitly excluded under section 16.2.18 of the Classic policy general conditions. Snowboarding and snow rackets are also excluded (section 16.2.19). This exclusion applies to the Classic tier; Plus and Premium tiers include broader adventure sports coverage but specific winter sports inclusion has not been confirmed in available sources.
Adventure sports cover
Conditional
Classic tier: a defined list of recreational sports and activities is covered provided they are not the primary purpose of the trip and are not practised professionally or competitively (e.g. cycling, kayak, paddle surf, snorkelling, trekking below 3,000 m, senderismo). A separate exclusion list prohibits higher-risk activities (e.g. kite surf, mountaineering, scuba diving, rafting, paragliding, parachuting, bungee jumping, snowboard). Plus and Premium tiers include a broader range of adventure sports with higher risk levels. Professional sport and competitive events are excluded across all tiers.
Pregnancy complications
Conditional
Pregnancy and childbirth are generally excluded. However, unforeseeable complications during the first 24 weeks of gestation are covered as an exception (section 16.2.8 of the Classic policy general conditions). Coverage is subject to the general medical expenses limits per tier and geographic zone. Planned deliveries, routine prenatal care and elective procedures are not covered.
Private civil liability
Covered
IMA IBÉRICA covers monetary compensation that may be claimed from the insured for involuntary bodily or material damage caused to third parties during the covered trip, per articles 1902–1910 of the Spanish Civil Code or equivalent foreign law. Includes legal costs and judicial bonds. Classic tier limit: €30,000. Professional liability, liability arising from motor vehicles, aircraft, firearms, deliberate acts, damage to entrusted objects, and contractual liability are explicitly excluded. The insured's co-travellers and their family members are not considered third parties.
Legal assistance
Optional
Legal assistance (asistencia legal) is included in the Plus and Premium tiers, providing an additional layer of legal protection during the trip. It is not included in the Classic tier. For the Classic tier this coverage is effectively not_covered; for Plus and Premium it is included. Coverage is listed as a key differentiator of the Plus tier over Classic.
24/7 assistance service
Covered
IMA IBÉRICA provides a free, uninterrupted 24-hour information and assistance service, available 365 days a year. Contact is available via phone (+34 91 390 73 18 from abroad), WhatsApp, or email. The service coordinates all guaranteed coverages, provides tourist and administrative information, and manages claims in real time.
