UNIQA
UNIQA is a travel insurance for the BG market with online purchase and 24/7 assistance.
Direct payment
The insurer, through the Assistance company, directs the insured to an appropriate healthcare institution, arranges transport when necessary, and pays the actually incurred costs for medical examinations, treatment, emergency dental care, purchased medications, and repatriation costs directly within the agreed policy limit. If the insured pays costs themselves, they must notify the insurer within 7 working days of returning to their country of residence for reimbursement.
Geographic scope
BG
Valid for territory specified in policy, excluding country of permanent residence of insured. Coverage not provided for Republic of Ukraine, Russian Federation, and Republic of Belarus. Countries with active tourist warnings from authorities are also excluded.

- COVID-19 medical expenses and medical transportation/repatriation explicitly included in all packages on the UNIQA pure platform, covering a risk many standard policies exclude.
- Emergency stabilization covered for sudden life-threatening crises from pre-existing conditions, including medical transportation and repatriation — providing a safety net beyond strict pre-existing condition exclusions.
Coverage limits
Urgent Medical Expenses (Acute Illness or Accident)
Covered
Covers necessary costs for medical examinations, treatment or surgical intervention, expenses for medical devices, and evacuation/transportation costs to the nearest or any other hospital for emergency medical care due to acute illness or accident. The sum insured is determined by the policyholder's choice and stated in the policy in EUR. Pandemic diseases declared by the WHO (including COVID-19 per clause 21.25 of the T&C) are explicitly excluded; however, the UNIQA pure platform explicitly states COVID-19 medical expenses are included in all packages.
Emergency Medical Treatment
Covered
Covers urgent medical treatment for acute illness or accident, including medical examinations, treatment, surgical intervention, and medical devices. Covers emergency stabilization for sudden crisis arising from pre-existing/chronic conditions. Excludes follow-up treatment after acute condition is resolved, planned surgeries, routine check-ups, and chronic disease treatment.
Hospitalization
Covered
Hospitalization costs are covered as part of urgent medical expenses for acute illness or accident up to the policy limit. Personal comfort costs during hospitalization are explicitly excluded.
Outpatient Treatment
Covered
Outpatient medical examinations and treatment for acute illness or accident are covered as part of urgent medical expenses up to the policy limit. Medical examinations and tests where no illness or accident is diagnosed are excluded.
Emergency Dental Treatment
Covered
Covers dental treatment for handling acute sudden pain only when required as a result of an accident covered under the policy, pulpitis, abscess, or tooth extraction. The limit of liability is up to 300 EUR per insured person.
Medical Transportation and Repatriation
Covered
Covers transportation of the insured or the insured's remains from the country of accident or acute illness or the healthcare institution to the country of permanent residence. Also covers emergency evacuation transport to the nearest or other hospital for emergency care. The limit is determined by the policy.
Medical Evacuation
Covered
Transportation costs for transporting the insured to the nearest or another hospital for emergency medical care are included within urgent medical expenses coverage up to the policy limit.
Repatriation of Remains
Covered
Covers transportation of the insured's mortal remains from the country where death occurred or from the healthcare institution to the country of permanent residence, up to the policy limit. Also covered in the case of a life-threatening crisis arising from pre-existing conditions.
Rescue Expenses
Optional
Optional additional coverage for costs incurred for search, rescue, primary medical care, and transportation to a healthcare institution by organizations involved in search and/or rescue of the insured person. The limit is stated in the policy. Available against additional premium.
COVID-19 Medical Coverage
Conditional
The UNIQA pure platform explicitly states that all packages include COVID-19 coverage for Medical Expenses and Medical Transportation and Repatriation. However, the General Terms and Conditions (clause 21.25, in force 08.08.2025) exclude any expenses for treatment of diseases declared as a pandemic by the WHO. This creates a conflict between the marketing platform and the policy T&C. Trip cancellation and trip interruption related to COVID-19 are explicitly NOT covered even when optional trip cancellation cover is purchased.
Pre-existing Conditions
Conditional
Treatment of chronic or recurrent diseases or conditions pre-existing before policy inception is excluded. However, in case of a suddenly occurred life-threatening crisis resulting from pre-existing diseases or accidents, emergency medical aid to stabilize the insured, plus medical transportation and/or repatriation of mortal remains to the country of permanent residence, are covered.
Winter Sports Coverage
Conditional
Winter sports off marked ski slopes and in free-ride zones are excluded. Standard winter sports on regulated slopes may be included if the risk is explicitly endorsed in the policy and additional premium is paid. The UNIQA pure basic 'easy' package includes accidents due to sports activities.
Extreme and Adventure Sports Coverage
Conditional
Professional and extreme amateur sports of any kind are excluded by default (including parachuting, bungee jumping, alpinism, trekking above 4,000m, paragliding, rock-climbing, mountain biking, diving, surfing, rafting, ATV/UTV driving, paintball, etc.) unless the risk is explicitly written in the policy and additional premium is paid.
Pregnancy Complications
Conditional
Pregnancy, childbirth, and abortion are excluded except in cases of a life-threatening condition. In a life-threatening obstetric emergency, emergency stabilization is covered. Sterility, gender change, and sexually transmitted diseases are also excluded.
Third Party Civil Liability
Optional
Optional additional coverage for the insured's liability for property damages and/or bodily injuries caused unintentionally to third parties. The insurer reimburses up to the agreed limit of liability. Excluded: liability arising from driving/owning a motor vehicle, vessel, aircraft, weapon, or real estate; non-performance of contractual obligations; professional liability.
Legal Assistance
Optional
Optional additional coverage providing legal services and covering expenses for lawyer fees and legal expenses (excluding judicial guarantees) if a lawsuit is brought against the insured under local law for unintentional damage caused to third parties, or a legal procedure is initiated for non-compliance with local administrative regulations. Excludes liability from driving/owning motor vehicles, vessels, aircraft, weapons, real estate, contractual non-performance, and professional liability.
24/7 Assistance Service
Covered
24/7 assistance hotline available at +359 (2) 903 01 10. The Assistance company provides all necessary assistance and information for obtaining medical and other aid as agreed in the policy. In case of an insured event, the insured must notify the Assistance company within 24 hours of the event's occurrence.
Key conditions
Assistance call deadline
The insured or their representative must notify the Assistance company within 24 hours of the occurrence of the insured event. If the insured is admitted in a life-threatening condition, they must inform the Assistance company before leaving the healthcare facility. If the insured paid medical costs themselves, they must notify the insurer within 7 working days after returning to their country of residence.
Unauthorized treatment
If the insured refuses to comply with instructions given by the Assistance company or the treating physician, the insurer shall not be liable and all subsequent medical and other costs incurred after the date of refusal shall be borne by the insured. Non-notification that prevents establishing the basis and/or amount of the claim may result in denial of indemnity.
Purchase while abroad
The policy must be purchased before the trip starts. The policy becomes effective from 00:00h on the stated start date and is valid only if the insurance premium has been paid. The insurance cannot be concluded for the country of permanent residence of the insured. Online purchase is not available for persons over 70 years of age at the start date of the trip; they must contact UNIQA offices for an individual offer.
Chronic conditions
Treatment of chronic or recurrent diseases or conditions pre-existing before the inception of the policy is excluded. In case of a suddenly occurring life-threatening crisis resulting from pre-existing diseases or accidents, emergency medical aid to bring the insured out of a life-threatening condition is covered, as well as medical transportation and/or repatriation of mortal remains.
Pregnancy
Pregnancy, childbirth, and abortion are excluded except in cases of a life-threatening condition. Sterility, gender change, and sexually transmitted diseases are also excluded.
pre_existing_conditions
