Direct payment

If the insured follows the insurer's instructions and contacts the ELVIA/SOS centre before seeking treatment, the insurer pays medical costs directly. If the insured pays out-of-pocket abroad without prior authorisation, they must submit original receipts and medical documentation upon return to Croatia for reimbursement.

Worldwide – all countries listed on the policy, excluding the insured's country of permanent residence, countries where the insured holds public health-care entitlement, and countries where the insured holds citizenship. For domestic travel (tuzemno), coverage applies within Republic of Croatia for single-trip policies up to 30 days.

Medical expenses

€50,000

Standard annual policy covers medical expenses up to 50,000 EUR worldwide. Higher tier available up to 100,000 EUR. Costs covered per insured person up to the agreed insured sum in full, including emergency treatment, surgery, medication, repatriation, and specialist transfers.

Emergency medical treatment

Covered

Covers costs of emergency medical interventions necessary to safeguard the insured's life or to relieve acute pain. Even where general exclusions apply, the insurer always guarantees assistance to the insured person in any situation of immediate life-threatening danger.

Hospitalisation

Covered

Covers inpatient treatment (first medical aid to hospital admission), arrangement of hospital admission in the most appropriate facility, hotel accommodation costs for an accompanying family member up to 50 EUR per night for a maximum of 7 nights if hospitalisation extends beyond 7 days after planned return.

Outpatient treatment

Covered

Covers outpatient medical visits at the location where the insured falls ill, transport to the nearest available doctor, and referrals to specialist clinics when medically indicated and prescribed by a physician.

Emergency dental treatment (acute toothache relief)

Covered

Dental treatment is covered exclusively for the purpose of relieving acute toothache, up to a limit of 150 EUR. Routine dental costs and dental prosthetics are excluded.

Covered

Covers costs of transport by officially approved emergency services to the nearest hospital or nearest available physician, including taxi transport in exceptional cases. Medical evacuation / repatriation

Covered

Organises and covers repatriation from the place of stay to the insured's place of residence or to a hospital in the home country selected by the insurer's medical staff, with a medical team escort if required. Total evacuation/repatriation costs are covered up to 50% of the agreed travel health insurance sum insured. Only the insurer's doctors may decide on the advisability and means of repatriation. If the insured refuses repatriation deemed possible by the insurer's doctors, the insurer's obligations are immediately suspended.

Repatriation of mortal remains

Covered

In the event of the insured's death, the insurer organises and covers transport of the body from the place of death to the deceased's home, or covers burial costs at the place of death, up to a limit of 5,800 EUR (including coffin costs). If the insured is not a citizen of the country where death occurred and the family wishes repatriation to the home country, the insurer organises transport and assumes financial responsibility up to 5,800 EUR.

The insurer covers necessary and documented costs of search and rescue operations incurred to save the insured's life on inaccessible terrain or to provide urgent and necessary emergency medical aid, including helicopter or aircraft rescue, up to 10,000 EUR.

COVID-19 treatment coverage

Optional

Optional supplementary COVID-19 coverage may be arranged alongside the travel health insurance policy. If the insured was aware of an epidemic risk at the time of purchasing the policy, coverage is limited to emergency medical assistance only (since COVID-19 is treated as a life-threatening disease). If the illness was unknown at the time of policy purchase, full treatment and hospitalisation costs are covered.

Excluded

Chronic diseases and their consequences are excluded if they existed or were known (or should have been known) at the time the insurance contract was concluded, even if untreated. Diseases treated in the last 6 months before the start of insurance are also excluded, including their consequences – except where medical assistance is required to save the insured's life or relieve acute pain.

Winter sports coverage

Excluded

Accidents arising from amateur or professional participation in sports including winter sports (listed explicitly in the T&C exclusions: e.g. skiing, alpine sports) are not covered under the standard policy. A sports add-on clause (Klauzula PO 1/2013 or PO 2/2013) must be purchased to include amateur or professional sports coverage.

Adventure and extreme sports coverage

Excluded

Accidents from extreme sports (parachuting, base jumping, bungee jumping, mountaineering above 6,000 m, rafting, scuba diving, aerial sports, combat sports, etc.) are excluded even with the sports add-on clause. Extreme activities remain excluded under the standard and sports-extended policies.

Pregnancy complications

Conditional

Pregnancy, childbirth, and intentional termination of pregnancy are excluded. However, in the event of acute complications during pregnancy, the insurer will cover the cost of the first medical intervention necessary to remove the risk to the life of the mother and/or child, provided the pregnant person has not reached 38 weeks of pregnancy and the 30th week of pregnancy has not been completed.

Personal liability insurance

Optional

Optional supplementary coverage for civil non-contractual liability of the insured for damage due to death, bodily injury or health impairment, or damage/destruction of property of a third party. Covers activities as a private individual in everyday life, non-motorised bicycle use, amateur sport (except hunting). Mandatory deductible (franchise) of 100 EUR per claim. Not available on annual policies (only single-trip policies).

Legal assistance (defence against third-party claims)

Key conditions

Assistance call deadline

The insured must contact the insurer/SOS centre no later than 5 days after the insured event, except in unforeseeable circumstances and force majeure events. In emergency medical situations, the insured should contact the 24-hour SOS line (++ 431 525 03 6240, collect call) immediately.

Unauthorized treatment

If the insured did not follow the insurer's instructions (i.e. sought treatment without prior SOS authorisation), they must inform the insurer of the reasons. After establishing the obligation, the insurer will reimburse costs from Article 10 of the T&C including costs of home visits and medicines. However, the insured bears costs of reminders and default interest.

Purchase while abroad

The insurance contract for a single trip must be concluded exclusively before the start of travel. It is not possible to purchase travel insurance while abroad or after the trip has begun.

In the event of acute complications during pregnancy, the insurer will cover the first medical intervention necessary to remove risk to the life of mother and/or child, provided the pregnant person is under 38 years of age and the 30th week of pregnancy has not been completed.

pre_existing_conditions

Conditions known or treated before or at policy inception are excluded. Specifically: chronic diseases existing at inception (even if untreated) and diseases treated in the last 6 months before insurance start are excluded. An exception applies only for life-threatening emergencies or relief of acute pain.

coverage_duration_limit

For individual, family and group policies (plans A, B, C), insurance duration is from 1 to maximum 365 days. For the annual individual policy (plan D), duration is exclusively one year, with each individual trip not exceeding 28 days. Domestic travel (within Croatia) is covered only for up to 30 days per single trip. For coverage longer than one year, a long-term contract with indefinite duration is arranged and automatically renewed until cancelled by either party.
