GRAWE
GRAWE is a travel insurance for the HR market with no online purchase and 24/7 assistance.
Direct payment
The insurer does not make direct payments to medical providers as a general rule. The insured must pay costs and submit original invoices, receipts, medical records, and police reports for reimbursement. However, for medically necessary transport, the insurer or its designated organization arranges and covers costs directly. If the insured arranges transport through a third party without insurer authorization, the insurer may reduce the reimbursement by any resulting damages.

Coverage limits
Medical treatment expenses
Covered
Covers costs of necessary medical treatment in hospital or outpatient settings during stay in Croatia due to acute illness (including Covid-19 epidemic/pandemic) and bodily injuries from accidents. Higher-standard healthcare services are not covered. Individual sum insured is 30,000 EUR; family sum insured is 60,000 EUR.
Emergency medical treatment
Covered
Covers costs of necessary emergency medical treatment, including inpatient and outpatient treatment, for acute illness (including Covid-19) and injuries from accidents during stay in Croatia. The insurance sum is 30,000 EUR for individuals and 60,000 EUR for families.
Hospitalization
Covered
Covers necessary inpatient hospital treatment costs incurred during stay in Croatia. If hospitalization exceeds 5 days, the insurer will organize and cover transport costs for one accompanying person to the hospital and back. Higher-standard healthcare services are excluded. The overall limit is the insured sum (30,000 EUR individual, 60,000 EUR family).
Outpatient treatment
Covered
Covers costs of outpatient (non-hospital) medical treatment during stay in Croatia for acute illness and accidental injuries. Higher-standard healthcare services are not covered. The insurer provides information about outpatient treatment options but is not obligated to arrange contact between the insured and a physician.
Emergency dental treatment
Conditional
Only emergency dental treatment costs for pain relief are covered. Dental or prosthetic procedures beyond pain relief are explicitly excluded. There is no specified separate sublimit; it falls under the general insured sum.
Rescue and medically necessary transport
Covered
Covers costs of rescue and medically necessary transport of the insured, including helicopter transport, up to 20% of the insured sum but no more than 10,000 EUR. The insurer independently decides on the necessity and means of transport. If the insured arranges transport without insurer authorization, the insurer may reduce the reimbursement.
Medical evacuation (repatriation to home country)
Covered
Covers transport of the insured back to their country of residence or to a neighboring country where the trip began, if medically necessary due to the severity of illness or accident. This is organized through the insurer's designated organization and is subject to the insurer's decision on necessity. The cost falls under the overall rescue and transport sublimit (up to 20% of insured sum, max 10,000 EUR), unless evacuation is arranged as repatriation.
Repatriation of remains
Covered
In the event of the insured's death in Croatia, the insurer organizes and covers the costs of either burial in Croatia or transport of the body to the insured's country of residence for burial. This is covered under the Additional Travel Coverages and the Return Transport provisions. No specific monetary sublimit is stated separately; costs are covered within the return transport terms.
Search and rescue
Covered
Costs of rescue are covered as part of the rescue and medically necessary transport benefit, up to 20% of the insured sum but no more than 10,000 EUR. The insurer decides independently on the necessity and means of rescue.
Covid-19 treatment
Covered
Treatment costs arising from Covid-19 (epidemic or pandemic) are explicitly covered under the medical treatment insurance section, as an exception to the general epidemic/pandemic exclusion. Quarantine accommodation costs are also covered up to 1,000 EUR per insured person when quarantine is ordered by authorities because the insured is ill or suspected of being infected.
Pre-existing conditions
Excluded
Treatment of chronic illnesses and illnesses that existed before the start of the trip, as well as their consequences, is explicitly excluded if they existed or were known at the time of concluding the insurance contract. Note: GRAWE TOUR (for Croatian residents) includes an optional add-on for acute exacerbation of chronic conditions (up to 10% of insured sum), but this provision does not appear in GRAWE TRAVEL T&C.
Winter sports coverage
Conditional
Standard recreational skiing or snowboarding is not explicitly excluded; coverage applies for accidental injuries during such activities. However, extreme skiing variants such as freeclimbing or other high-risk activities listed in Art. 14.1.4 are excluded. GRAWE TRAVEL covers Croatia only and is designed for foreign visitors in Croatia; winter sports would only be relevant to the extent practiced within Croatia.
Adventure and extreme sports
Excluded
Adventure and extreme sports are excluded. The insurer's obligations are excluded for accidents during recreational sports including: alpinism, freeclimbing, base jumping, bungee jumping, combat sports, horse riding, diving, cliff jumping from heights over 10 m, speleology, mountain biking, and other high-risk sports. Motor sports competitions and training are also excluded.
Pregnancy and complications
Excluded
Pregnancy management and childbirth are explicitly excluded. All consequences or complications of pregnancy (including deliberate termination of pregnancy and childbirth) and treatment of consequences of contraception use are not covered.
Personal liability
Excluded
Personal liability coverage is not part of the GRAWE TRAVEL product. The GRAWE TRAVEL policy covers medical expenses, accident, luggage, and return transport. Personal/private liability can be added as a separate optional product under GRAWE TOUR products, but it is not available in GRAWE TRAVEL.
Legal assistance (criminal proceedings)
Covered
If the insured is detained, the insurer will provide assistance in organizing legal protection and overcoming language barriers. No specific monetary sublimit is stated for GRAWE TRAVEL (unlike GRAWE TOUR MULTI TRIP which specifies up to 5,500 EUR for legal costs and 2,200 EUR for translation). This falls under Additional Travel Coverages.
24/7 assistance service
Covered
A 24/7 service center is available at +43 1 525 036 236 and putnostete@grawe.hr. Upon any insured event requiring medical assistance, the insured must immediately contact the GRAWE service center by telephone. The center provides information about hospital treatment options, facilitates communication between the insured's GP and the treating hospital physicians, and transmits information to the insured's family on request.
Key conditions
Assistance call deadline
In the event of required inpatient treatment or illness requiring repeated outpatient treatment, the insured must IMMEDIATELY notify the insurer. In the case of return transport, the insured must notify the insurer without delay and exclusively by telephone via the insurer's assistance telephone line. Failure to notify may result in a reduction of the claim payout by the amount of damages caused by the delay.
Unauthorized treatment
If the insured arranges medically necessary transport through an organization other than the one designated by the insurer without authorization, the insured is liable to the insurer for damages caused. The insurer may then reduce the claim payout by the amount of such damages. Higher-standard healthcare services are not covered regardless.
Purchase while abroad
GRAWE TRAVEL is designed for foreign nationals already staying in Croatia (with registered residence up to six months). Coverage starts on the date and time designated as the start of insurance in the policy, but not before commencement of travel and only if the premium has been paid and the state border was crossed upon entry into Croatia. If the policy issue date and start of insurance date are the same, coverage begins at 00:00 the following day.
Chronic conditions
Treatment of chronic illnesses and pre-existing conditions known at the time of contracting is excluded. The policy covers only acute illness (sudden onset). Persons with organ diseases requiring treatment, severe physical or mental impairments, or 100% permanent disability cannot be insured without prior special approval from the insurer.
Pregnancy
Pregnancy management, childbirth, deliberate termination of pregnancy, and all consequences or complications of pregnancy are explicitly excluded from coverage. Treatment of consequences of contraceptive use is also excluded.
pre_existing_conditions
Illnesses and conditions that existed or were known before the start of travel, and their consequences, are excluded from medical treatment coverage. Treatment sought for the purpose of travel (i.e., the reason for traveling to Croatia was to obtain treatment) is also excluded. Treatment that was certain to be needed during the planned trip duration is excluded.
coverage_duration_limit
Insurance can be contracted for periods of 3 days, 8 days, 15 days, 31 days, 3 months, or up to a maximum of 6 months. The insured must be a foreign national with a registered stay in Croatia of up to 6 months. Coverage ends upon the designated expiry date or earlier if the trip ends (e.g., the insured crosses the Croatian border on departure).

Policy specifics
Medical evacuation
Coverage for medically necessary transport including helicopter transport is included under rescue and transport costs (Art. 18.2.1 of GRAWE TRAVEL T&C), capped at 20% of the insured sum but no more than 10,000 EUR. Repatriation (transport to country of residence) is covered under Art. 18.2.2 when medically necessary, organized by the insurer's designated partner.
Trip cancellation
Trip cancellation insurance is not part of GRAWE TRAVEL. GRAWE TRAVEL covers foreign nationals during their stay in Croatia; the concept of trip cancellation before commencement applies differently. Return costs due to unforeseen circumstances (early/delayed return) are covered under section D.
Repatriation
Coverage for transport back to the insured's country of residence (repatriation) when medically necessary is included under Art. 18.2.2 of GRAWE TRAVEL T&C, organized through the insurer's designated organization. Repatriation of remains in case of death is covered under sections D and F of the T&C.
Luggage protection
Loss, damage or destruction of luggage due to theft, robbery, delayed delivery by carrier (minimum 12-hour delay, reimbursement capped at 50% of insured sum), transport accident, fire or natural disaster is covered. Cash, musical instruments, surfboards, weapons, vehicle parts, and certain electronics are excluded.
Acute exacerbation of chronic illness
GRAWE TRAVEL does not include coverage for acute exacerbation of chronic illnesses. Unlike GRAWE TOUR (which covers acute exacerbations of chronic conditions up to 10% of the insured sum under Art. 18.4 of the GRAWE TOUR T&C), the GRAWE TRAVEL terms do not contain this provision. Pre-existing chronic conditions are excluded.
Geographic coverage area
GRAWE TRAVEL insurance coverage is valid exclusively on the territory of the Republic of Croatia. It cannot be used for events occurring in other countries. The product is specifically designed for foreign nationals during their stay in Croatia.
Maximum coverage duration
Coverage duration options are: 3 days, 8 days, 15 days, 31 days, 3 months, or up to a maximum of 6 months. The insured must be a foreign national with a registered stay in Croatia of up to 6 months. This is more flexible than GRAWE TOUR which can be up to 360 days or GRAWE TOUR MULTI TRIP which covers annual policies with each trip up to 45 days.
Premium payment timing
The insurance premium must be paid in full before coverage begins. Coverage starts on the day and time designated as the start of insurance in the policy, provided the premium has been paid by that date and the state border has been crossed upon entry into Croatia. Payment is accepted in cash, debit card, or credit card.
Emergency contact requirement
In the event of required inpatient treatment or illness requiring repeated outpatient treatment, the insured must IMMEDIATELY notify the insurer. For return transport claims, notification must be made exclusively by telephone to the insurer's assistance line. Failure to notify may result in a reduction of the claim by the amount of damages caused by the delay.
Policy cancellation right
The policyholder may notify the insurer of withdrawal from the insurance contract (unilateral contract termination for distance contracts) within 7 days of the contract date. In that case, the policyholder has no obligations under the contract. The policy can be terminated before the date designated as the trip start date. Policies contracted for less than one month cannot be unilaterally terminated.
