Territorial scope
The insurance is valid for the territory of the Italian Republic, Vatican City, Republic of San Marino, all States forming part of the European Economic Area, as well as the Principality of Monaco, Switzerland, Andorra, Serbia, and Bosnia-Herzegovina. Coverage extends to other countries via the Green Card (International Insurance Certificate) for countries whose international codes are not crossed out on the certificate.Coverage applies in Italy, Vatican City, San Marino, Switzerland, Monaco, Andorra, Serbia, all EEA states, and other Green Card system countries whose international codes are not crossed out on the AXA-issued international insurance certificate. Coverage operates within the limits of national compulsory MTPL legislation of each territory; Italian policy limits apply only in Italy. The insurance covers Italy, Vatican City, the Republic of San Marino and all EU member states, as well as any additional countries listed and not crossed out on the International Insurance Certificate (ex Green Card). When circulating abroad, the R.C.A. guarantee operates according to the conditions and within the limits of the individual national legislations, subject to any greater guarantees provided by the policy. If the contract linked to the Green Card is terminated or suspended, the policyholder must immediately destroy the Green Card.Coverage is valid in Italy, Vatican City, the Republic of San Marino, all other EU member states, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, the Principality of Monaco, Switzerland, Andorra and Serbia. For circulation abroad, coverage operates according to each country's mandatory RC Auto legislation. The Green Card remains valid for the premium-paid period plus a 15-day grace period after policy expiry.
Green card rules
The insurer is required to issue the Green Card (International Insurance Certificate) upon request. Coverage in Green Card countries operates according to the compulsory motor insurance legislation of the country where the accident occurs, subject to the higher contractual limits where these apply. The card extends coverage to all countries adhering to the international certificate system whose codes are not crossed out on the certificate. The Green Card (international insurance certificate) is issued by AXA upon the policyholder's request and is valid for the same insurance period for which the premium has been paid. If the policy ceases or is suspended during the coverage period, the policyholder must immediately return the Green Card to AXA. AXA retains the right of recourse for amounts paid to third parties as a consequence of the policyholder's failure to return the Green Card. The Green Card (Certificato internazionale di assicurazione) is issued together with the R.C.A. policy and is valid in the countries whose abbreviation is not crossed out on the document. In the event of voluntary suspension of the contract, the policyholder must not use or must destroy the Green Card. When the contract lapses or is suspended, the policyholder must immediately destroy the Green Card. The Green Card is automatically issued with the policy and is valid for the coverage period. In case of policy suspension or cancellation, the policyholder must return the Green Card to the insurer. Failure to return the Green Card after cancellation entitles the insurer to exercise the right of subrogation for any claims paid to third parties after cancellation. For travel in Green Card system countries, the insurer notifies UCI (Ufficio Centrale Italiano) for claims management involving foreign-registered vehicles in Italy.
Driver restrictions
The insurance operates for any driver authorised by the policyholder. An optional 'Guida Esperta' (experienced driver) clause restricts driving to the vehicle owner plus persons aged over 26 years, providing a premium discount of up to 15%. In case of a claim under this clause, if a driver under 26 caused the accident, Allianz reserves the right of recovery. The 'Patto per i Giovani' product variant is available for policyholders up to age 27 with a single named driver and a recovery right up to EUR 10,000 if another driver caused the accident. The insurance is not operative if the driver is not licensed under applicable regulations. In case of an expired licence, coverage remains operative provided the driver renews within 3 months of the incident. Optional 'Guida Esperta' restriction: up to EUR 2,000 per incident franchise applies if the driver is under 26 years of age or has held a licence for less than two years. The policyholder may choose from among four driver type options: (1) Any driver (free driving); (2) Experienced driver (minimum age 26); (3) Identified exclusive driver; (4) Driving for two (two cohabiting drivers identified in the policy). If at the time of the claim the vehicle is driven by a person whose characteristics do not match those indicated in the policy, Generali Italia exercises the right of subrogation against the insured up to a maximum of €5,000 (not exercised if use by a non-authorised driver is due to necessity or if the driver is a repair/custody employee). The insurance does not operate when the vehicle is driven by a person not legally licensed to drive under applicable regulations, when driven by a person under the influence of alcohol (Art. 186, 186bis, 187 Highway Code) or narcotic substances, or when driven by a person who is a student driver without a qualified instructor. A premium surcharge applies when regular drivers are habitually under 26 years of age. For Intesa Sanpaolo account-holder policyholders, the insurer waives subrogation in cases of drunk driving (alcohol only) and non-compliant transport of third parties.
Claim notification deadline
In the event of an accident, the policyholder must notify Allianz by calling the toll-free number 800 68 68 68; this call has full legal force as a claim notification. Alternatively, written notice must be given to the agency managing the policy or to the company within three days of the event or from when the insured became aware of it, stating the place, date, time and circumstances of the event, the extent of the damage, and the names and addresses of any witnesses. The claim must be filed on the joint accident form (Modulo di Constatazione Amichevole – CAI, also known as 'Modulo Blu').The policyholder must report the claim in writing to AXA within 3 days of the incident occurrence (or from when they became aware of it), providing date, time, location, accident dynamics, vehicle details, driver information (including personal data and driving licence), insurance policy details, and any witnesses. Use of the standardized 'blue form' (friendly accident report / CID) is recommended. Failure to report within 3 days may result in the right of recourse by AXA for amounts paid to third parties due to prejudice suffered, pursuant to art. 1915 C.C.The claim must be reported within 3 days from when the event occurred or the insured became aware of it, using the Amicable Accident Statement (Modulo C.A.I.) supplied by Generali Italia. The report must be followed as soon as possible by any additional information, documents and any judicial acts relating to the claim. Failure to report, inaccuracy or delay gives Generali Italia the right of subrogation. For Tutela Legale, the claim must be reported promptly and in any case within the time useful for the insured's defence. The driver or owner must notify the insurer of any claim within 3 days of its occurrence or becoming aware of it, regardless of whether the ViaggiaConMe Box has automatically detected and signalled the incident. Notification can be made by phone (800.124.124), post, fax, email or via branch. The friendly accident report form (Modulo CAI) must be sent to the insurer. Failure to notify may give the insurer the right of subrogation pursuant to Art. 1915 of the Italian Civil Code.
Bonus malus rules
The premium is adjusted annually based on the Bonus-Malus class (Classe di Merito Universale – CU) as determined by the IVASS regulation n. 9/2015. The observation period begins on the policy inception date and ends 60 days before renewal. One claim-free year moves the policyholder one class lower (bonus); a penalised claim moves the class higher (malus). The optional 'Protezione Bonus' add-on preserves the bonus class despite one at-fault claim per year (not available on temporary policies). An optional 'ULTRA 4R' variant with fixed deductible provides a discount of 10%–50% on the standard Bonus-Malus premium and does not affect the merit class in case of a claim. The policy uses the Italian Bonus-Malus merit class system (Classe CU - Conversione Universale, per ISVAP/IVASS Regulation No. 4 of 9 August 2006). Premium is adjusted annually based on claims during the observation period. The observation period begins on the policy inception date and ends 2 months before the first full annual premium expiry, with subsequent periods of 12 months. Two or more claims during the same observation period result in a premium increase according to the universal correspondence scale. Policyholders may reimburse AXA for settled claims to avoid premium increases (facoltà di rimborso). The Bersani Law allows transfer of the most favorable CU class within a cohabiting family unit. The policy is underwritten in the Bonus/Malus form, articulated in 33 merit classes with premium coefficients ranging from 0.500 (classes 1–4) to 3.000 (class 33). Merit class evolution is governed by three tables (cases a, b, c) depending on the completeness of the risk record and the number of penalising claims (i.e. claims paid with principal or equal liability) in the last 5 policy years plus the current year. The malus applies only if principal liability of the insured is established or when the sum of partial liabilities from multiple shared-responsibility claims over the last five years is at least 51%. The policyholder may avoid premium increases by reimbursing (within 6 months of contract expiry) the amounts paid for claims in the preceding observation period (Riscatto Sinistro). An observation period (1st period: from policy inception to 60 days before first full annual expiry; subsequent periods: 12 months each) is used to determine merit class evolution. The policy uses a proprietary 33-class Intesa Sanpaolo Protezione Bonus/Malus system ranging from SuperBonus 7 (best) to Malus 8 (worst), alongside the Italian universal CU class (1–18). At first subscription the internal class is assigned via conversion from the CU class on the risk certificate. No claims during the observation period result in a class improvement; claims with principal or parity responsibility cause class deterioration. In the Bonus/Malus with Franchise formula (€500 deductible), the first at-fault claim is disregarded for class evolution (bonus protection). Policyholders may reimburse claims paid by the insurer within 9 months of policy expiry to avoid or reduce malus. The observation period runs from policy inception to 2 months before annual expiry, then in 12-month periods.
Proof and next steps
Direct payment policy
Allianz Italy applies the CARD (Convenzione tra Assicuratori per il Risarcimento Diretto) system: in the event of a road accident between two motor vehicles, the injured party submits the claim to their own insurer, which settles on behalf of the at-fault party's insurer. Third parties may also file directly against Allianz as the at-fault party's insurer.AXA applies the Italian direct compensation procedure (risarcimento diretto) under D.P.R. 254/2006: non-responsible or partially non-responsible claimants may claim directly from their own insurer. Applicable only to two-vehicle accidents both regularly insured and registered in Italy with both drivers identified. AXA commits to settling or communicating the reasons for non-settlement within the statutory deadlines (30/60/90 days). AXA also commits to paying vehicle damage claims within 21 days of the accident report.Generali Italia manages third-party liability claims directly. Where the direct indemnification procedure (Risarcimento diretto, Art. 149 CAP) applies, the policyholder's own insurer handles payment to the damaged party. Generali Italia pays the amounts due to third parties up to the agreed limits. Subrogation rights are exercised against the at-fault insured in the cases provided for by law and the contract. For Intesa Sanpaolo current account holders the premium is debited directly to the account. Non-account holders may pay by bank transfer, credit card or postal order. In the Km Illimitati variant, roadside assistance is always bundled; claims are settled directly by the insurer under the direct indemnity procedure (Art. 149 Italian Insurance Code). The insurer waives subrogation rights in cases of driving under the influence of alcohol and for damages to transported third parties when transport is non-compliant, for account-holder policyholders.
