Overview
KOOPERATIVA poisťovňa, a.s. Vienna Insurance Group is the first private universal insurance company in Slovakia, founded on 30 October 1990. It currently ranks as the largest insurance company in Slovakia by prescribed premium, having overtaken long-time market leader Allianz in 2023, and offers over 60 life and non-life insurance products. In recent years it has expanded into the pension savings segment, acquiring the DSS company 365.life (renamed Kooperativa DSS) and a 10% stake in the supplementary pension company STABILITA, as well as a 35% stake in the brokerage UNIVERSAL maklérsky dom.

Regulatory updates
KOOPERATIVA poisťovňa is a licensed insurer supervised by Národná banka Slovenska (NBS) under Act No. 39/2015 on insurance. In November 2023, the NBS Banking Board confirmed a EUR 60,000 fine against KOOPERATIVA after finding deficiencies in its anti-money-laundering and counter-terrorist-financing program, including failure to identify politically exposed persons and to report around 128 unusual transactions to the Financial Intelligence Unit between December 2014 and April 2019. The company stated it respected the decision and paid the fine. Separately, a preliminary ruling request (Case C-29/25) concerning KOOPERATIVA was lodged with the EU Court of Justice from the Krajský súd v Prešove in January 2025. From 1 August 2026, an amendment to the Slovak MTPL (PZP) Act takes effect industry-wide, introducing stricter automated verification of insurance status, digital green cards, and fines for uninsured vehicles, which affects all Slovak motor insurers including KOOPERATIVA. The insurer remains fully active and licensed as a member of the VIG group and was named Poisťovňa roka 2025 (Insurer of the Year) by TREND.
