Regulatory updates
HUK-COBURG is regulated by BaFin. Following major natural catastrophe losses (Ahrtal floods and hailstorms) and a wave of customer complaints about delayed claims handling, BaFin demanded in 2024 that HUK-COBURG reduce its claims-processing backlog as quickly as possible, and a BaFin spokesperson confirmed that delayed claims settlement was the most common insurance complaint in Germany that year. HUK-COBURG responded with additional staffing and new claims sites (e.g. a new Saarbrücken claims centre being built up since 2025). By its March 2026 annual results presentation, CEO Klaus-Jürgen Heitmann reported that HUK-COBURG had exited its technical loss zone, achieved what he called its most successful year in company history for fiscal year 2025, and had reduced its claims backlog.
