Overview
Generali Versicherung AG is Austria's third-largest insurance group, present in Austria since 1832 and in its current legal form since 1998 (following the merger of Erste Allgemeine and Generali Leben). With approximately 15% market share and around 5,000 employees, it serves around two million customers with a comprehensive range of insurance and pension products for private and corporate clients. It is part of the Italian Assicurazioni Generali S.p.A. group. In 2025 the FMA approved the merger of BAWAG P.S.K. Versicherung AG into Generali Versicherung AG, further consolidating the group's Austrian operations.

Regulatory updates
Generali Versicherung AG is supervised by the Austrian FMA under the Insurance Supervision Act (VAG 2016). A major structural development occurred on 17 June 2025, when the FMA approved the merger of BAWAG P.S.K. Versicherung AG into Generali Versicherung AG. As of 1 January 2026, the FMA also became the central authority for financial sanctions supervision of insurers. In June 2026, the FMA announced a leadership change in its insurance supervision division, with Martina Andexlinger succeeding Peter Braumüller. The FMA Annual Report 2025 (published June 2026) confirms that Austrian insurers and banks remain stable, profitable, and well-capitalised, and that DORA (digital operational resilience) became applicable in 2025.
