Direct payment

Baloise is authorised to settle or defend, in the policyholder's name, liability claims brought by third parties against the policyholder, and issues payment in money once a claim is established as justified.

Geographic scope

Europe and EU territories

Cover applies within the geographical borders of Europe and the non-European territories belonging to the scope of the European Union; the extent follows the legally required minimum cover of the visited country if that is higher. If Baloise has issued an International Green Card, cover also extends to the non-European countries listed on it that are not crossed out.

Unique selling points

  • Liability cover of up to EUR 100 million per claim for combined personal injury, property and financial loss, well above the statutory minimum.
  • VerkehrsopferSchutz, built into the MTPL policy itself, pays up to EUR 1 million in compensation when the at-fault driver flees the scene, is uninsured or acted intentionally.
  • RabattSchutz Premium keeps the no-claims discount class unchanged after one at-fault claim per year.
  • The Mallorca-Police extends liability cover to rental cars used abroad, a benefit many competitors charge extra for.
  • Baloise Start lets up to two children build their own no-claims discount while driving a parent's insured car, without affecting the parent's bonus class.

Coverage limits

Bodily injury liability

€100,000,000

Baloise provides a lump-sum liability limit of EUR 100 million per claim event, covering personal injury, property damage and financial loss combined, with a sub-limit of EUR 15 million per injured person. The exact insured sum is confirmed on the policy schedule (Versicherungsschein).

Source

Property damage liability

€100,000,000

Property damage liability is included within the same combined lump-sum limit of EUR 100 million per event as bodily injury and financial loss; no separate sub-limit for property damage alone is stated.

Legal defence against liability claims

Not established from the insurer's documents

If claims against the policyholder are unjustified (in whole or in part), Baloise defends against them at its own cost as part of the standard MTPL cover; no separate monetary limit is stated for this defence cost element.

International Green Card / non-European coverage extension

Not established from the insurer's documents

Where Baloise has issued an International (Green Card) Insurance Certificate, MTPL cover extends to the non-European countries listed on it, unless the country name is crossed out.

Roadside assistance (Baloise Assistance)

Not established from the insurer's documents

Baloise Assistance (breakdown and accident help) is not part of the standalone MTPL contract. It activates only if a Voll- or Teilkasko policy is also in force with Baloise for the same vehicle, and it is not offered at all under the Baloise Basis tariff.

Driver accident protection (FahrerSchutz)

Not established from the insurer's documents

FahrerSchutz is a selectable add-on to the Kfz-Haftpflichtversicherung that compensates the driver's own personal injury based on actual damages (as if a third party were liable), capped at the liability sum for personal injury agreed in the MTPL policy, up to a maximum of EUR 8 million. It also covers up to EUR 1,000 for psychological support and driving lessons after a severe accident. It cannot be taken out under the Baloise Basis tariff and only covers drivers aged 24 or older.

Accident victim protection for occupants (VerkehrsopferSchutz)

Not established from the insurer's documents

VerkehrsopferSchutz is part of the MTPL contract itself (not a separate policy) and pays up to EUR 1 million in compensation (Schmerzensgeld) per injured, co-insured occupant, plus up to EUR 1,000 for psychological support, when the at-fault third party fled the scene, was uninsured, or acted with intent. It is subsidiary: the injured person must first have claimed from the Verkehrsopferhilfe e.V. and obtained a final decision.

Key conditions

Territorial scope

Cover applies within the geographical borders of Europe and the non-European territories belonging to the scope of the European Union; the extent of cover follows at least the legally required insurance scope of the country visited.

Green card rules

If Baloise has handed out an International (Green Card) Insurance Certificate, MTPL cover also extends to the non-European countries named on it, as long as the country name is not crossed out.

Driver restrictions

The vehicle may only be driven by a person holding the required driving licence, and must not be driven under the influence of alcohol or other intoxicating substances; the policyholder, keeper or owner must not knowingly allow use by an unauthorised or unlicensed driver.

Claim notification deadline

Any event that may lead to a claim under the policy must be reported to Baloise within one week; claims already in litigation or subject to third-party demands must be notified without delay.

Bonus-malus rules

Premiums follow a no-claims discount (Schadenfreiheitsrabatt) system with classes ranging from SF50 down through SF1, ½, 0 and M. A claim-free calendar year moves the contract up one class; one or more claims in a year lead to a rating step-back, the size of which depends on the number of claims reported.
